Rape, sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry

I've just wasted a couple of hours arguing with Steven Seagal fans on Facebook, and, sadly, it seems that many fans of people don't care about allegations, and wouldn't, even if they were proved. They like the films, the like the man, and nothing can take that away. :(

I sure many Seagal fans will fall into the MRA demographic and all these allegations will be deemed part of some feminist conspiracy to undermine 'real men'....

:D

More importantly, both of them?
over 15,000 of them, who all seem to write like this:
" No it's more likely there trying to get a pay out u dumb fuck the only way u can no what happened is if u was there all this shit now a days coming put this star did this this star did that just for a pay out that's why they come out and not back then frentened shut the fuck up u twat if that happened they still wouldn't be coming forward until the poor man was dead so how about shut the fuck up and come back when there is proff it's like me saying u raped me do us a favour on this page a go crawl back to your life where u got nothing better to do than slag off people because it unhappy with your own life my advice is see a councillor because u ovs so fucked in the head u got a chat shit about other people instead of dealing with your own life u twat"
People calling the victims slappers and things like that.

Loads of women defending him too. Saying they would still be fans even if it was proved that he was a sex criminal

So you trolled their face-book page?

What did you post there? Just for context. ;)

Well, there's a lot of bad people throughout history who continue to be revered, and their preaching practiced, and their misdemeanors glossed over and ignored....

ETA by that I mean I am not surprised

I was already a member of the fan site cos they post these ridiculous photos of him, which fascinate me.
I just posted up one of the articles and another post about how he was a sex pest and it went from there.
Wasn't trolling them, just wanted to find out if other fans were as disappointed. only a few thought he was a disgrace. the rest are blindly reverent towards him, but can't appear to string letters together to make words, let alone put them in the right order.

Well that's a bit inappropriate. It was Japan he stayed in.

Anyway...thread title should be changed most likely so we can talk about Roy Moore and others. All the others. Feels like a damn is bursting.
If we did that, we'd then have to merge it with all the Trump stuff and with the Westminster stuff.

I won't post it cos it's a bit urgh, but there's a well known photo of Seagal groping a 15 year old Katherine Heigl that basically sums him up, let alone the numerous allegations currently doing the rounds.

Is that the photo where she's laughing?

Not to say he hasn't done some dodgy shit but that photo seems a bad example.

People better qualified than me may shortly comment, but my understanding is that not everyone reacts the same way to sexual assault, he was a big star at the time and she may have felt obliged to go along with it despite her true feelings.

Fair point that we don't know how she really felt about it but surely we can agree on gross, and a warning sign for his interactions with women?

I nervously laughed my way through some excruciating comments and behaviour Saturday night because I felt too awkward to challenge it. Through this time I took my drink to the toilet with me (at a friends house not a pub) because I wasn’t sure if someone would spike it. Her laughing doesn’t mean she wasn’t recoiling inside and longing for the interaction to be over.

I feel pretty shit about some of the stuff that went on Saturday but I’m sure if I mentioned it to the people involved they’d say I was laughing and looked like I was enjoying it.

Laughing can be a defence mechanism. Chimpanzees smile when they're feeling threatened. It means 'I'm your subordinate, show me mercy/I'm no threat/don't kill me'. I've tried to laugh threatening men off lots of times. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I completely agree with all this, Orang Utan 's reactive sarcasm notwithstanding. I never meant and do not mean to minimise or dismiss in any way the fact that the photo in question shows Steven Seagal sexually assaulting Katherine Heigl, it does and it's nasty. What I actually posted is that it's not a very good example, because it will I have no doubt be dismissed in just that way by much of the media, should it come up, and absolutely definitely by Seagal's fans and by the man himself / his spokespeople. ''Look, she's laughing!''

The fact this is an natural and common human response to fear will almost certainly also be dismissed and ridiculed. I imagine it already is being dismissed and ridiculed on Steven Seagal fan pages. I'd guess this is one of the reasons OU was so headfucked and disgusted by his experience there.

yep. was just going to post that. many were staff and friends of staff/ actors who were subject to this apparently. i know some of the actors have disussed this recently and decided to go formal, after hiding / not registering it for years. real emotional guilt here from the staff
