Rape, sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry

I wonder if womanisers like Russell Brand or Warren Beatty are worried?

Obviously it was all consentual, but where does the line blur between seduction, and convincing an unwilling person into bed by pressure

I don't know what it's like for the men reading, but all of these accounts have the absolute ring of truth in the phrases they report the men saying. Even though the things they are saying are in many cases pretty odd. (Soft boiled clitoris).

42 year old man here, rings true for me.

And I can totally understand why people might be a bit suspicious as to why all of this is being reported now.

The Hoffman case is a perfect example. That kind of stuff - what are you going to do? It's not illegal - or only very slightly. You learn pretty young that this is what being a woman involves. And then suddenly people are listening because your one story on its own is like "so what?" But if one of the people who harassed you was famous, then just for a while, and only for that story, that man - people want to know.

I'm not suspicious at all about the timing. There is an attempt going on to change things, and that requires a barrage of stuff usually kept private, or at least kept within the gossip of particular circles and bubbles, to be made public and dwelled on. I think its got so much more momentum this time that ever before that maybe stuff will really change this time, I so hope it does, but I make no predictions.

I don't think I'd mess with the actual Tony Montana in question either.

An utterly harrowing, despairing read. The guy sounds like he is genuinely damaged due to what happened but is doing all he can to try & live a normal life. Fuck.

Spacey, this is what *you* did to another human being, you cunt.
Whilst I'm certainly not one of the 'I hope he gets it in the prison showers brigade', hearing stories like this makes you at least hope life catches up with Spacey. In a big way. :(

Interesting that the victims of spacey are dealt with in such a non-caveated way. No questions about what they were wearing, why they were in that bar or out so late, or how much they had drunk, why didn't they mention it before, all instantly believed, no questions or innuendos that it's a witch hunt, has gone to far, the 'fine line' of consent and how much flirting, precisely, is acceptable.

Oh for the day all victims are treated the same way.

And Weinstein's been virtually forgotten. So have all the others - it's as though Spacey's taking all the collective blame. He's got enough of his own, if even half the accusations are true, and the others shouldn't be able to hide behind him.

A predatory straight male might just be your nice old uncle whose married and has two kids so that’s ok. But a predatory gay man...got paedo written all over it, right?

Tbf some of the accusations are of him with underage boys (who he knew were underage). Though so are Weinstein's. :(

I'm being grossed out by a view that seems to come from a lot of older people, including women that 'Oh well, plenty of women have used sex to get what they want'

As though this was some kind of cracking advantage for women and not a sign that men are gatekeepers and some knew they could use demanding sex for favours from women who couldn't expect to be recognised and rewarded for their talents or merits on account of being female. But it often seems to be played as though men are the victims of these women they use for sex. And can you imagine how many women have been promised something by a man in a position of power in return for sex... and never even been given it? Win-win for the man because the woman's silence is basically guaranteed by humiliation and the treatment she'd receive if she spoke out.

I have actually seen just such a defence of Spacey. From a pseudo 'left' organisation (who had their own rape scandal a couple of decades ago). Even down to 'just how old did this fourteen year old look?' Quite vile. But those freaks really are still out there.

WRP?

I don't think Weinstein is forgotten, its just shitty high speed news cycles and perceptions about levels of fame.

I don't think anyone is successfully hiding behind the Spacey stories, and given the levels of abuse it seems likely have occurred across all industries, there will be others to come yet, even if its just to get their '5 minutes of shame'.
