Question Time tonight

Last night was disappointing with regards to Gaza and Israel. No-one on the panel was critical of Zionism, not even the Green, who seemed to be floundering more than a bit. A woman from the audience expressed her disgust at Israeli behaviour, and got the biggest round of applause of the evening. But that was more or less it. Discussion cut short. But don't worry. We'll be back to this issue in due course. (With another unbalanced panel spouting the usual platitudes). Boo!

Absolutely, and it would have been good for her initial point - that "self-defence" does not equate to bombing the fuck out of civilians - had been put to every member of the panel.

That Reform wonk was a right conspiratorial cunt. There may have been some libel in one of his diatribes.

I normally dread the Scottish episodes, as it usually becomes an independence slanging match, but I don't think it was mentioned once this week.

Anyway, they're off to Philadelphia this coming week, for a probably expensive American election jolly. It'll be interesting to see who they have on. Relatively local for Littlejohn, and Farage likes to serve his Clacton constituents from Stateside too.

So tonight we've got Martina White, Malcolm Kenyatta, Mehdi Hasan, Bryan Lanza and Anthony Zurcher. The first two are Rep and Dem politicians, Lanza's a Trump advisor, and Zurcher is the Beeb's North America correspondent. I presume White is from the saner end of the Republicans, if they've got a Trump spad also on.

This American version is fucking wild :D The gurning redneck with the pocket protector....

It was unwatchable. I put it on and sat through a few minutes of unhinged neo-cons and weirdo pompous centrists shouting over each other before switching off again.

I rarely watch Question Time because I don't want to put my foot through the telly. But this time, we watched it, and it was still shite but the different setting stressed me out a lot less. Mehdi Hasan was really very good, Malcom Kenyatta was as good as you can expect for a Democrat politico and seemed at least sane. Bryan Lanza is a fucking loon, but he's an occasional panellist on BBC News channel so I knew what to expect. The Republican politico, Martina White, was totally unhinged. Enough said. Anthony Zurcher was pleasant enough with his fact checky stuff. Fiona Bruce, as usual, was evil incarnate.

As for the audience... the loudest applause was clearly for Hasan and Kenyatta's comments. The bulk of the questions, on the other hand, seemed to be loaded right wing and the members of the audience picked by Bruce for their comments also seemed to be right wing. But then I always suspect she or the producers are on the lookout for any gurning melts to choose for their crankery.

In terms of BBC balance, pretty much every talking point ended up being all about Trump. I think Harris only got mentioned a couple of times. Anyway, the telly survived intact.

And the word bollocks was used twice.
Bruce suggested that was the first time it had ever been used on Question Time, which is, er, nonsense. I distinctly remember Dimbleby reading a quote from a panelist back to him, I think about one of the Brexit deals, which described that deal as bollocks. It was quite entertaining to hear his Queen's English accent swear.

I suspect most Americans are non the wiser as to what it means, unless they like the Sex Pistols.

Jasper Carrot, told an american, that Bollocks. is what Brits call zits.

I have just caught up with this. Thought it was quite a laugh. Was not surprised it was all about Trump, some pro mostly anti. The first woman in the audience in the flowery shirt to speak was unreal in the way she supported Trump.

It reminded me of the suggestion I've made a few times on here, that Trumpism is essentially a religion, and their prophet is above any criticism. It's the kind of suspension of critical thought that I struggle to think of examples of, beyond organised religion.

He really could do no wrong, in some peoples eyes; they just wouldn't accept the facts.
How many times have you heard his quote about immigrants eating your pets?
People were saying he never said that or the quote was misinterpreted.
Likewise sealing the boarders. Don't ya just love Americans.

Anyone else notice the discrepancy/hypocrisy last night, from the Tory and Labour people in particular. Hand wringing and ethical dilemmas about the value of individual human life, when it comes to voluntary euthanasia or assisted dying. On Gaza, Israel has the right to defend itself. Palestinian life is obviously of less consequence.

its no doubt a measure of just how horrific Israel's "self-defence" has proven to be in practice that the Palestinian doctor was allowed to mention on the BBC the report filed by seventy eight doctors who had had children brought in on a daily basis shot in the head by IDF snipers.Bruce followed up with " I, of course cannot verify any of that" thereby no doubt saving her own job.😕

I've not heard anyone in the past year claim that the events of 7 October were not horrific. However using it as the pinnacle of horror, unable to be matched or surpassed in the modern era, in scale or morality, is simply bollocks, to use Question Time's new favourite word.

"Former" mogul says that it's not Murdoch, Dacre or Lebedev. It could be Richard Desmond, although they tend to go for Telegraph and Mail hacks, rather than Express or Star ones on QT.

Anyway, tonight we've got a minister and shadow minister who are both fairly unremarkable, Danny Sriskandarajah, who I remember as being relatively sane, and Emily Sheffield, who edited the Standard as it continued its Lebedev-isation, and is Cameron's sister-in-law. I saw her on something else quite recently, and she was very right wing, perhaps unsurprisingly.

Darren Jones, Andrew Griffith and Munira Wilson from the three main English parties tonight. Joining them are Sir Tom Hunter, who got his knighthood for donating shitloads of money to New Labour "services to Philanthropy and to Entrepreneurship in Scotland", and Craig Oliver, who replaced the honourable Andy Coulson as Cameron's spin doctor.
