Peaky Blinders series 5 starts Sun. August 25 2019 at 9pm

The Billy Boys bit was embarrassingly bad. Jimmy’s accent was terrible. But the whole thing made me cringe. It did make me wonder if that’s how Brummies feel about the Peaky Blinders.

If the accents were realistic we wouldn't understand them south of the border. :p

More importantly nor would the US viewers who the beeb marketing dept probably care more about.

Personally i can ignore all the dodgy accents. People said the same with chernobyl.

Thats him from game of thrones. The one who gets everywhere, aiden gillan. good opening two eps, yes the slow mo swaggering along to anachronistic rock is overdone a touch but thats what I'm here for.

Don’t get me wrong, I still like the show. It still looks good. But it just seems to be moving from one good-looking scene to another. It seems to have lost something of its coherence, its movement, its narrative, in favour of static set pieces.

Agree with all of that. The point about set pieces is particularly accurate. The narrative holding them together is increasingly thin and confused.

It's trying to be a moody meditive Brum noir piece, a gangster series and glossy and glamorous at the same time. And failing.

Michael is J in Animal Kingdom which is about a Californian crime family. His American accent is passable but having watched 4 series of that it’s hilarious seeing him attempt Brummie. Although at least he doesn’t come across as cockney or scouse like the others. He’s from Kingston upon Thames apparently.

I thought Arthur reach new levels last night - it was a cockney, pretending to be a brummie doing a cockney accent wasn't it?
I thought he was having a go at Australian. I saw an article where Helen McCrory said her accent research consisted of watching Ozzy Osbourne videos.

I didn’t think Michael was Brummie. We was raised by more genteel foster parents in a countryside location somewhere outside of the Peaky Blinders’ original haunts. I had the feeling to the south.

So I guess his accent is meant to be less urban.

Not rating this series much so far but tbf sometimes they seem ropey at first and build up. Seen the writers say they will do another two or three to take them up to outbreak of WW2, reckon it might end up one of those they should have knocked on head sooner.

Was a big fan of love hate a few years back and they've had half of the love hate cast in, nidge, john boy, Siobhan, so that's good

He’s lying Urban we all speak like that!

last night i think sir oswald mosley said thomas shelby had received the distinguished service medal

but you'd have thought an auld soldier like sir oswald would have known that it was awarded to sailors and members of the naval division

and we were told in season one shelby won the dcm and mm

never mind the anachronistick presentation of oswald mosley, it would be nice if they'd at least be internally consistent.

I'm still a little confused about Michael when he flipped out on Tommy during the first meet in the Garrison with Gina.

So Michael having explained the ship encounter with Bill Boys/IRA to Tommy, Tommy says OK I believe you and then words to the effect of:

"...just remember your unborn child has witnessed what you said. And will be born according to..."

At which point suddenly Michael goes apeshit at him and has to be restrained. What was that about?

Gypsy curse stuff I think - 'if you're lying your kid will end up deformed' sort of thing. Which is nice...
I want to know what happened to Artist Guy too!

I probably shouldn’t look at this thread, I’m so good at suspending belief that I keep up with most soaps, but Urban on Telly really brings me back to Earth with a crash.

Same here, I have to wonder how some urbs ever enjoy anything. :D

BTW - I loved the way they dealt with the mad nuns.

In last episode they had Mosley and Thomas Shelby clay pigeon shooting and Mosley, still a Labour MP, telling Shelby he would split at beginning of the next year (presumably 1931 although the wall street crash of '29 was only two episodes earlier) to form the BUF.

Wtf. What happened to the new party bit

Much better episode. More narrative flow. Still confused about Jimmy, though. If he’s supposed to be Billy Fullerton, why not just have Billy Fullerton? They’ve got all sorts of other real historical figures doing things that didn’t happen. And Fullerton was in fact a fascist and Moseley supporter.

'the british union of fascists will be born on january 1st next year, the first day of a new decade' (52:30-52:40)

don't let's get into arguing when a decade starts, i think it's clear he means 1/1/1930
