Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

Stunning finish in the 3x3 basketball.

France leading Netherlands by one point in overtime, only for Netherlands to score a two point buzzer beater to win the gold.

Keirin should never have been included; something very shady about it's introduction and anyway it's wimpy now this is what I call paced bike racing; Stayer Racing.

Somehow don't think it was ever going to become an Olympic event though (H&S). I was there that night assuming it is the final.

Finally got some surfing on the main channel! Does seem a little unfair that the French guy who won gold is from Tahiti and is essentially surfing at his local beach. Doubt JK Rowling will be getting her knickers in a twist about that, though.

Skateboarding then. An 11-year-old Chinese girl competing.

Love how they go for the big trick, crash out and they're disappointed yes but not crushed, and give a warm salute to the crowd. They're still amazing. As the commentators say, skateboarding is all about failing, failing again and then failing again.

It does feel like these are a far friendlier games. The old Cold War nonsense is gone and athletes are celebrating each other's achievements regardless of nationality.

Completely disagree. Firstly, it's a huge sport in Japan, if we can have dressage and curling why can't they have Kierin? Secondly, it's not really paced riding, it's a mass sprint, a discipline not really covered except in the Omnium points race. Thirdly, it's genuinely exciting to watch in a way that a lot of the track racing isn't for non-aficianados.

I would be the first to dump dressage for a number of reasons. (involves dancing horses; involves artistic judgements; not a sport etc). Getting rid of Curling would not be popular in Japan either where it is also very popular. Apparently Eve Muirhead was very big in Japan at one time. Anyway you have convinced me it can stay :D

You've not got the hang of this arguing on the internet lark yet Richard. We're both meant to stick to our guns till it descends into profanity and abuse and we get stuck on mutual ignore. I'll let you off this time but I expect you to call me a cunt and offer me out next time or there'll be trouble.

The bouldering is fun as you get to see different people trying to solve the routes, and how their different styles and body types play into their different approaches (obv example being short v tall).

Not claiming I can really tell myself, but it also seems that many were coming up with solutions that the route setters hadn't intended :D

Sorry, having been a teenager, I don't quite buy all the love and cuddles these skateboarding girls are giving each other after each run. Teenagers, particularly highly competitive ones, don't really work like that.

I noticed the camaraderie among the female skaters earlier as they were all introduced, and there is no way that was anything other than genuine - just a bunch of daredevil young women living their best lives and egging each other on to greater heights. But hey, let some miserable old bastard bloke tell us otherwise.

They're skateboarders, though. They'll often know each other already, have hung out together in many cases no doubt. And skateboarding is all about trying new stuff and being encouraged by those around you. It's the culture of it.

Imagine one of those speed climbers on Gladiators! They'd be at the top before the ref blew his whistle for the gladiator to start chasing them!😲

Better than stabbing each other. :(
