Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

Think gymnastics can be particularly harsh in that you can know your chances have evaporated (e.g. by falling) but still have to somehow maintain your composure and finish things off.

I guess that's true for most artistic disciplines, but also maybe something like canoe slalom, where you can miss a gate and know you've lost, but you can't really cruise or vent until it's over.

Watching the women's road race I see that two sisters are in the breakaway but what is remarkable is that they are riding for 'Afganistan'. How can that be I thought, So just looked up their amazing story.

Wow, what a story. The very best of luck to them.

Controversial end to the skeet shooting. Replay shows the GB girl clearly hit that clay, despite the ref ruling no hit. Silver it is then.

Starting to look a bit inevitable for ol' Nole.

Strongly dislike a lot of what he believes/says, but hard to argue that in pure tennis terms he doesn't deserve the gold slam. Particularly given how clearly important it is to him to win gold for his country.

I heard they’ve only bought the rights to 500 hours of live coverage so they need to use it wisely I guess

It is a bit annoying, like people who constantly change tv channel and don’t really watch anything properly. Perhaps good for a general overview of what’s happening across the games but if you want to watch an entire match / event it’s shit

Warner Bros Discovery paid €1.3bn for exclusive European rights. The BBC just couldn't compete with that.

It was only thanks to laws in the UK around certain events being on free to air TV that the BBC were able to get what they have

Meanwhile, Taiwan have just beaten China to the gold in the badminton

Bloody hell, despite being defending Olympic champions, they were unseeded, and their opponents were #1 seeds

Still a medal for China when they report it here, however much they seethe inside.
Do they just add the totals and declare them all as for the motherland? I remember working in a Chinese school in 2000 and everything stopped for the Olympics, teachers were crying at every gold medal, it was pretty unbearable.

No, they do list them separately. Been bigging up the Hong Kong fencer who won gold but expect this will be glossed over quietly.
