Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

Unfortunate choice of thumbnail by discovery+, given Marta is suspended for this game, meaning unless Brazil defeat the hosts without her, she's played her last game for them :(

Bloody hell, they only went and did it!

Only caught the last 10 mins (all post 90 min...!), but Brazil were playing shithousery 101 to hang onto their 0-1 lead, and the French crowd are understandably not happy at the final whistle.

Femke Bol is her own highlight reel on last legs of relays. (Apart from the blip last year)

Seeing her run down other athletes from being 20, 30, 40meters down coming into the home straight is one of the best sights in athletics :)

She would also appear to be quite eccentric :D Her mate's face....

Looks like a dreary day tmoz. Three gym apparatus finals (including a likely gold for J.J.), some canoeing and a bit of swimming in the evening. Definately a day to catch up on all the shit that's clogging up my sky box for the past week.

Any takers for the motion/suggestion we keep all live event chatalongs here in this slightly megathread?

Feels fragmented to have separate threads for the individual disciplines, and also reduces the "stop what you're doing and switch to the swimming, something special is happening".. it also is in line with my relationship with events in that it's all just random, passing, and the next enthralling situation is in this Olympics-only sport that might as well be 'its a Knockout'...is just around the corner.

Obvs the other threads are carve outs for other discussions (eg boxing), but the joy of this place for live stuff is everyone commenting together

Tbh, while it hasn't worked out like this, I sort of saw it going the other way.

Dedicated threads for a discipline, and then a general/megathread where people could pop in and say "quick, all over to the swimming thread!" or whatever.

As with all megathreads, individual conversations/events tend to get truncated or lost in the mix, as people self-limit or are asked to "not derail the thread" with one convo, or alternatively there's separate convos going on at the same time. Can mean that few discussions get the room to breathe or develop.

Dedicated threads allow those who are really into a particular sport to natter about it in more detail, while still giving a place for everyone to come together during particularly exciting live events.

A gold for Irelands Rhys McCleneghan in Pommel Horse artistic gymnastics.

Woo hoo.

And of course the two lads from Skibbereen won gold medals in rowing.

Looking forward to seeing Daniel Wiffen win another gold for swimming.

And fingers crossed for Kelly Harrington in the boxing final..

That looked a harsh red card for India in the hockey
I obviously have no idea what the parameters are for reasonable/harsh in hockey, but at the very least it looked quite a lot like a deliberate attempt to hit his opponent's head with his stick, which instinctively feels like it should be a red card offence.

Among all the discussion about Imane Khelif, it felt like it got a bit lost that Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting has been through essentially the same thing.

In fact, she was stripped of her bronze at last year's World Championship, and is currently fighting Svetlana Kamenova Staneva, the woman who inherited her medal!

'bout a minute ago, it looked like Staneva threw Lin to the ground with quite a lot of force :hmm:

Hope they both get gold medals after all the disgusting abuse and pile ons they've had by fellow women who hypocritically claim to be feminists.

The commentators are saying it was the right call so I'm sure they're correct. The guy was running at speed and his stick waved up though. I don't think it was intentional. These things always look far worse in slow motion - rugby's a prime example of that.

Lin guaranteed at least a bronze as she just beat Staneva by unanimous decision.

Coils be reading too much into it, but Staneva immediately walked away from the ref and Lin after the result. She then 'respectfully' held the ropes open for Lin, but when Lin went to talk to her, Staneva seemed more interested in Lin just going through the ropes, before she went to take her bows with the ring to herself.

I am aware of the convention of holding the ropes for your opponent, but isn't it usually the loser that leaves and the winner who stays in the ring? :hmm:

Oh aye, of course, they frequently do. But it didn't seem clear why he raised his stick then; don't think the ball was there to be struck, and didn't really seem like a 'running action', so to speak.

Shoot-out for GB in the hockey against India!
Which we lost.

Huge advantage in the match proper with an Indian player sent off just before half time and them down another for a 10 minute period. We should have overloaded them and gone for it but it was too slow and cautious.

It wasn't a full ten minute period as one of the GB guys got lippy with the ref and got himself a two min stint on the sidelines as a result. Stupid.

I've just watched a horse dance to Fleetwood Mac being cheered on by Snoop Dogg. Through the looking glass.
Currently watching it now, GB on. What's not to love? A horse dance to Queen while Snoop Dogg watches on in full get up.

Occurred to me that team GB has won a medal every day of the Olympics so far, hopefully that can be maintained through the next week
