Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

Oh, I thought they'd been beaten ages ago
They lost their first pool match, won their second, lost the final one tonight but still went through automatically in second place. Going to be interesting seeing how the BBC try to dance around this neutrally if they get to a point in the tournament where they simply can't ignore them anymore.

crushed! Squeezed from the off, almost as if they were sacrificing themselves to let anyone else win
The Canadian looked the most deliberate in the crush. Ended up 5th despite consistently finishing second to Beth all the way through the heats. Hope she thinks it was worth sacrificing a likely medal for herself to do that.

Sad, as after a very successful day, this was the presumed gold (or, let's be realistic, silver) I was most looking forward to seeing. Sounds a bit mad, but for a good while now you get the impression that other nations just don't like Brits on bikes winning medals.

What nine Gold medals already. What is this country coming to. I remember when we had a team of plucky Brits who had a go and a laugh and perhaps by accident came back with a Gold medal and a couple of bronzes. I seriously suspect some of our team have been practising! it is just not British.

edit seriously I was dashed after the womens BMX Beth was robbed.

The chopping and changing on the BBC is really fucking annoying. Was a great action packed first quarter in the women's hockey - then we've now been moved over to... Archery. They don't seem to have a way to continue witih the hockey. Just have another stream...? I'm currently watching an American feed on the hockey which is very weird.

Morning all. Just settled down to watch our 16 year old in the archery while eating a lovely breakfast of eggs benedict and Cumberland sausages washed down with a huge mug of Assam tea.

GB is currently playing Argentina in the women's hockey (two of the best sides in the world). I'm sure the archery is fascinating but a choice would be good and surely not that hard to set up for the beeb.

Well theyve paid for the rights to the hockey (they showed the first quarter).
They don't pay by the sport, they pay by number of simultaneous streams. A bit like Netflix packages that state how many devices can stream at the same time.

Fair enough. GB's just leaked two goals anyway but apparently this is a dead rubber, both sides have already qualified for the quarters.

What is it with just about every British competitor, they talk about, this Olympics, that either one of their parents passed away, they're getting married or both, this year? Feels like I'm watching the XFactor, at times.
Anyway, congratulations to the men and women's eights on their gold and bronze, this morning.

Think to some extent it’s the bbc interviewing technique, plus perhaps the personal story is out there with media for colour / a human angle.

Grief is more relatable to those watching on the sofa than getting up at 5am to row / swim / whatever each morning

I don’t think it makes for as interesting an interview… compared to this 1992 example

“My coach Ron Roddan, said to get a good start. I went on the B of the Bang”

The road race coverage is truly appalling. I think they've probably spent more time showing ariel shots of Versailles than actual racing. You might as well just listen to it on the radio, for all you get on TV.

The diminished BBC coverage is a real shame. It's impossible to catch up on anything other than a British performance. Makes the Olympics about 90% less enjoyable. Previously I could just tune in to any random sport and get stuck in to the competition, regardless of GB involvement.

I'm watching it all on CrackStreams - Get Olympics 2024 Live Stream. Everything's there for free. Currently watching the road race on Canadian TV - dont know much about this event but at what point do the arrogant looking guys in the peloton start to worry about the amateurs from Uganda, Rwanda, Thailand etc up front who are currently leading by 7 minutes?

Apparently they're not allowed ear pieces here which they're used to on the circuit so maybe not aware of the lead?

Safety pins! You'd think with how high-tech everything else is in sports these days that they'd come up with a better way to attach names and numbers to a vest then safety pins. Especially when some of the athletes don't seem to be able to manage them that well.

Ta. I'm tired of illegal streaming though. It's the only way to watch cricket, but it's not pleasant. Crashing through all the adverts, the random places it stops working, and all the rest of it. I do actually pay my licence fee! I'd quite like the BBC to do better. :(

That site's actually pretty good. Only a couple of click throughs and very stable. Dealing with American commentators can be a bit trying at times but I assume Discovery is the same.

I agree though. Wtf are the BBC spending our license fee on? Abusive guys in sequin jumpsuits? Pedo presenters?

Less and less people are paying the license fee. 500,000 less last year alone.

Does anyone understand this windsurfing???

Eta Is it also a bit random that the Netherlands are really good at it?

It's quite cool. Must be really fun. Random that Israel are good at it too.

As an aside, I wonder what the threshold for countries being allowed to compete in the Games is. Russia's banned. Israel's not. I'd argue that what Israel is currently doing is worse than Putin.
