Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

I am a long way from being an Olympic athlete also, but that's not the point. Going through male puberty has a big performance impact, or are you arguing that we shouldn't segregate on the basis of sex at all?.
An interesting idea, which would do away with truly exeptional female athletes being confined to only competing against other women. In real life however we already do have sex segregation, what's being discussed here is disqualifying people for being women in the wrong way.

We're talking about a woman boxer who has always been a woman and didn't go through male puberty as far as anyone knows.
Anyway, she's been beaten by a woman 9 times in her career so should all they be disqualified as a danger to women too?
The bit that makes me roll by eyes is when the "it's so unfair!" lot were whining about her breaking her opponents nose, or something. I'm not sure what they think goes on in a boxing ring? They run around tickling each other with feather dusters or something?

Nobody actually knows for certain whether Khalif is female or not. But everyone has nevertheless picked a side and is arguing vociferously. All this speculation is in really bad taste.

the IOC seems to, according to that BBC story

Khelif has always competed in the women's division and is recognised by the IOC as a female athlete. "The Algerian boxer was born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport," IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said on Friday.

Well, we do know. The only unclear question is whether certain characteristics meet the IOC (and other) definitions.

Fatima Whitbread used to get a lot of shit for not being feminine enough but at least nobody called her a cheat. I'm open to arguments against athletes who've been through male puberty taking part in women only competitions of some kinds at some levels but that's not what's happening here, it's a woman with some masculine characteristics being bullied and slandered.

Well, the IOC are saying one thing. The IBA another.

Anyway, I'm going to leave my contributions to this particular issue there as I don't think there's anything to be gained about rehashing it all again.

As the IOC puts it:

We have seen in reports misleading information about two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two athletes have been competing in international boxing competitions for many years in the women’s category, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments.

These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.

According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should “establish a clear procedure on gender testing”.

The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years

More like the case illustrates that there is no watertight line that can be drawn between 'male' and 'female' regardless of what definition you use.

So the transphobes making a fuss about this are actually just drawing attention to yet another piece of evidence that their worldview is completely wrong and their repulsive behaviour is completely without justification.

The transphobes have definitely shown their true colours. JK Rowling has been tweeting a load of disgusting slander and lies about this under the pretence of caring about protecting women but doesn't seem to have much to say about an actual convicted child rapist being allowed to compete in the Olympics.

Just watching some of the judo, apologies if I've missed any chat but does anyone know the rules exactly? I'm sure the holds and throws are skilled and have technical terms etc.

It can't just be like what I always seem to see, I could recreate it at home in the morning. Meet the OH on the landing, you grab each other's dressing gown then hold it tight as you both start to squirm. Loosen the gown up a bit in the melee then see who can trip the other over before falling on top of them.

The head of the IBA, Umar Kremlev, appears to have a twitter account on which he is posting attacks on the IOC claiming: "The 2024 Olympic Games are outright sodomy and the destruction of traditional values throughout the world and Thomas Bach is responsible for this." (I did wonder if this was an AI spoof some of his comments are so extreme and he hardly has any followers but scrolling through his feed it seems genuine and his grudge against Bach long standing.)

Kremlev has ties to Putin and on being appointed head of the IBA moved most of their operations to Russia and appointed Russian state owned Gazprom as the main sponsor. In 2023 they defied IOC recommendations and allowed Russian fighters to compete at the 2023 world championships under the Russian flag. This is the tournament in which Khalif was suspended from following her victory over Russian competitor Azalia Amineva. Tawainese boxer Lin Yu‑ting who had been competing in women's boxing since 2018 and who has won world championships was also stripped of her Bronze medal by the IBA following a failed 'gender test'. It might be noteworthy that Kremlev has been involved in initiatives to strengthen diplomatic ties between China and Russia.

Initially Kremlev himself claimed that: "According to the results of DNA tests, we identified a number of athletes who tried to deceive their colleagues and posed as women. According to the results of the tests, it was proved that they have XY-chromosomes." In their most recent statement they say they failed to meet the necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have "a competitive advantages over other female competitors". They now say that the specifics of the test are confidential. The IOC have attacked this "sudden and arbitrary" decision which was "which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years."

The animosity between the IBF and IOC comes from them being stripped of Olympic status due to long standing concerns about governence, lack of transparancy and corruption. This decision was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last year. Many IBA members have left to form a new group called World Boxing who hope to be recognised by the IOC as the sport’s governing body ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Kremlev has responded by calling IOC President Thomas Bach evil and that he needs diapers because he has soiled himself.

Just some background on the individual that everyone is basing their very certain opinions about Khalif's body on.

It depends what you want really, you can trend towards inclusiveness or towards fairness, but you can't have both.

Some French chap just won the mens 200m individual medley, the crowd were chanting something, his name maybe? 😆
