Swedish lad makes the final of the men's single table tennis, having beaten the Chinese no.1 on the way. Think he's got the no.2 as his opponent tomorrow. Should be a cracker.

The entire trans/intersex/XY arguments can be ignored, boxing only works as a contest when the fighters are equally matched physically, that’s kinda the point of it. The two women were clearly mismatched and the fight shouldn’t have happened.
They can't be ignored, males and females of the same weight category have different punching power etc.

I'm wondering whether some people have even watched boxing before. It's not commonly fought to a bracing draw by clones, usually one person is better than the other, and often by some margin. That is in fact how the ranking system is organised.

I'm not sure boxing would work very well as a sport if you kept just removing people who had unfair physical advantages every time - much as I'd be delighted to briefly hold a heavyweight championship having disqualified everyone taller, stronger, fitter and firmer-jawed than me ...

I know how I feel about people (men) with XY chromosomes in women's sport but I don't think anything conclusive has been said either way about the status of those two boxers. Some people with XY chromosomes have DSDs which affect typical male characteristics and some don't. And until something official comes out (and I'm thinking something on the level of CAS, like with Caster Semenya) or the athletes themselves say what the reason was they were banned by the IBA I don't think this wild speculation is really helpful to anyone, especially people who are defenders of women's sport - because what if they are wrong? Fairness is really important in sport, fundamental, along with safety, and this applies to everyone. If Angela Carini felt her safety was in question that is totally valid and there needs to be answers about why an experienced boxer felt she had no choice but to end her bout.

Funny how the words of those women who fought Khalif without complaining are ignored
Well said. Anyway, if we're going to disqualify people for having born abnormalities, when are these people going to scream to strip Ian Thorpe of all his swimming medals because of his freaky, massive flipper feet giving him an advantage?

Anyway, missed the horsey jumping gold to pop up to the shop for more supplies but now settled in for the afternoon and evening with some nice Pimms with all the works. Especially looking forward to BMX finals later. Cheers!

Brilliant display from the Chinese mixed doubles in badminton. Weirdly their congratulating of each other seemed rather perfunctory.

He does have an advantage but that's nothing compared to the advantage he got by going through male puberty.

As someone who also went through male puberty, I'm pretty sure the advantage is bigger between he and I than it would be between me and the average woman. For that matter I'm pretty sure an Olympian woman would as well. There is no amount of training I could have done at any stage of my life that would have put me in the same race as Paula Radcliffe.

Not sure whether Elon Musk or JK Rowling will take the gold medal for utterly unhinged transphobia but as Robyn Pennacchia at Wonkette notes, they could be helping to put Khelif in serious danger in her homeland, despite the fact that she's a cis woman

It is illegal to be openly transgender or to transition in Algeria. Gender roles tend to be very strict in that country and Khelif has faced no small amount of sexist opposition even just due to her interest in sports.

It was always going to go this way, with "not womanly enough" becoming the line to be policed, and trans people were pretty clear in warning it would right from the start. Khalif's single biggest crime here has been her strong jawline.

I am a long way from being an Olympic athlete also, but that's not the point. Going through male puberty has a big performance impact, or are you arguing that we shouldn't segregate on the basis of sex at all?.

Calling her a man is pretty gross behaviour and it's disappointing to see that sort of thing here tbh. While we don't know the details of this specific case in general where sportswomen have come up against DSD type issues they've grown up as women and the first indication they're not has been that they've failed a test. Imagine how traumatic that must be. Not saying there's no debate to be had here but acting as if this is some bloke sneaking in is well out of order.
