Olympic Track & Field - aka Athletics thread

Well you could say that about all of them then.........

That's exactly what I'm saying. The stakes are too high to leave it to chance. Money. Money. Money.

I remember when the iron curtain came down and all the controversy about some of the former soviet and eastern block athletes...

this is nothing new !

Of course it's not new, but the technology of today's cheating has reached the levels where it has made top-level sport a chemists game.......and the testers are way behind. The money involved ensures this, the cheaters are privately funded whereas the testers are restricted by the distribution of taxation.

Just look at how the "war on drugs" is faring to see where the money lies.

I'm assuming the governing body was happy for her to compete....they sorted out the Dwayne Chambers affair against a lot of opinion that wanted him at the olympics.

Money and politics.

*sigh*

:(

Chambers failed a drugs test in competition - i.e. at an event. This woman went missing three times out of competition.

There is nothing the two have in common. Absoutely nothing.

And when has there really been a time when that wasn't an issue.......

cripes, i'm certainly not naive enough to have ever believed that they weren't inexplicably linked !

So why are you cheerleading this stinking heap of drug-cheating, political proganda driven, corporate-sponsered pile of money-grubbing shit while the olympics has precipitated one of the worst crackdowns on dissent within mainland China's borders over the last decade?

FFS?

EDIT: Not to mention the crackdown in supposedly "free" HK.

Because i'm a hypocrite.........and i've loved the olympics since i was a kid
!

There you go !

...so am I right in thinking:

If a UK athlete fails a drug test they can't compete in the olympics.

However if a UK athlete 'fails to provide' for three drug tests, they get to attend the olympics as if nothing had happened.

OK.

But it's fucked up millions of people over here. Perhaps it's time to let go of your childish dreams?

Woof

Well seeing as its nearly 3/4 of the way through now what will me not watching the rest achieve exactly ?

Are you suggesting it be got rid of altogether ?

Hey!

Shut up!

She WON!!!!!!

I've reported this thread. It was really good until Christine Ohuruogu won today. Nigel has made another thread to discuss the vile evil (oooh anagram) at the heart of the Olympics which I think is an interesting discussion but this isn't the place for it.

I don't get it......if you aint watching it , you don't like it (assuming here)....why so angry about 1 female athlete ?

They may as well get rid of it......unless the chemists get to take the podium.

But the olympics is discredited on a far deeper basis than just this. It has been long ago hijacked into a political/money/drugs event that blatantly violates the so called "olympic spirit".

And what I'm also suggesting is, from where I'm sitting in China, that as a self-admitted hypocrite who seems to give little thought to the massive suffering of people that has directly resulted from these games, your since-childhood love of the spectacle might benefit from the balance of some rather more adult, political perspective.

Well that's me told then !

Bollocks do they.

If you get stopped by the police while driving and are found to be over the limit for alcohol you get done for drink driving.

However, if you refuse to give a specimen you get done for refusing to give a speciment which carries the same penalty[/]

The reason for this is to stop people who know they are over the limit simply refusing to be tested and escaping a conviction.

Sorry but this appears to be a one upmanship contest about who is worthier than who.....

i apparently am to blame for what goes on in China......funny that, thought they had enough do dealing with their own goverment !

Straw man, chick. There's no need for that.

:)

Why do you choose to ignore the widespread, horrific violations of human rights that the 2008 games have produced? This will give China's leaders the excuse they've been looking for to sustain the longstanding suppression of its people.

Is it really worth supporting that so you can "Ra, Ra, Ra" over a few clever chemists and their drug cheating "athletes".

The "olympic spirit" was dead long ago and the 2008 Beijing games are the final nail in the coffin.

I mean absolutely no offence to you, chik - I've always liked you as a poster, but I find it offensive that people are prepared to gloss over all of this madness - especially with respect to this debacle in Beijing and the numerous additional human rights violations that are currently occurring daily as a direct consequence thereoff.

I find the whole debacle totally disgusting.

But, what the hell,eh? business with China is far more important than human rights and if we can smooth things over with a bit of Ra Ra Ra nationalism and convince people that they are not worshiping the chemists, then all's well I guess.

Well good for you..................

heres a medal !

Oh golly gosh!

Thank you!

I'm clean.

You can test me if you want, I'm smart (not that it's that difficult anyway, but....) I'll never test positive.

*wags tail*

Now you're just spamming.

Anyway, just watchin the olympic highlights programme, after they interviewed Mason they just put it into perspective how high he jumped, didn't realize it was that high!

It's not really appropriate to compare the drink-drive situation with athletics. If you refuse to give a sample at the Olympics, you will be banned, just as a drink-driver would. But this was about out-of-competition tests.

I saw something on the internet once showing the detail of dates of satisfactory tests, interspersed with which were the missed tests. It convinced me that there was no real possibility of her indulging in a systematic programme of drug abuse. But I can't find it now.

This is some information on two of the tests

Tests she missed:

Oct 12 2005: Testers waited for an hour at Mile End stadium, but Ohuruogu failed to appear. June 28 2006: Ohuruogu tried to drive across London when she realised she had not notified testers she had switched training venues from Mile End to the Olympic Medical Institute in Harrow. She failed to make it in time.

July 25 2006: A school sports day at Mile End forced her to relocate at the last minute to Crystal Palace. In the panic to drive to the venue, Ohuruogu forgot to tell the testers.

Tests she passed:
July 16 2006: Ohuruogu underwent a random test following her run in the 200m at the European Championship trials in Manchester where she finished fifth. Result: negative.

July 28 2006: Finished last in the 400m at the British Grand Prix at Crystal Palace. Again chosen at random to be tested. Result: negative.

There was an independent enquiry on the Ohuruogo case by Charles Flint QC. The Daily Telegraph reported

"The Flint committee concludes that there were many other times during the critical nine-month period when Ohuruogu tested negative, which is why the report declares with such certainty that she was not guilty of doping.

In fact, Flint says in his conclusion that if he had the powers to set Ohuruogu's punishment, he would have chosen a less stringent three-month ban.

Flint writes: "In fairness, the committee should make clear its view as to the limited degree of fault attributed to her. This was a minor unintentional infraction of the regime due only to forgetfulness."

Thing is........and yes it's fucking hateful but you are probably right !

And you might be suprised but i don't disagree with you all that much (although i don't believe all those sportsmen and women are all cheats by any means).....

i did have a tussle in my mind about watching it........i'm a bit crap i suppose !

Do you honestly think that anyone could have changed it though ?

We had a boycott in Moscow in 1980.....didn't change anything.....if you are just talking about the sporting angle the same could probably be said about any of it at the top levels..........i dunno....

feel crap now !
