Netflix recommendations

The Diplomat, series 2

Still up to the high standards of season 1, but basically for the sort of people who are fans of the US Democratic party in the same way Trekkies are fans of Star Trek.

I would still recommend it, mind.

You wot?

I'm thoroughly enjoying it as a piece of entertainment, but I'm def no Cratty (as I presume fans of the Democrats are called), not sure why think it's aimed there?

I'm really late to the party, but Heartstopper is very good.

A friend has just come to stay for a few weeks and recommended this. She's seen it all, but was happy to rewatch along with me watching it for the first time. I've just searched this thread for it.

Back in April, nottsgirl asked: "Is it worth giving Heartstopper a go?"

fucthest8 replied: "Yes. It's sometimes a little saccharine, but in a lot of ways (for me) that made it a great antidote to the awfulness of so much going on in the real world. Lovely bit of escapism. Edit: captures the spectacular awkwardness of many people's teenage experience perfectly. I related :D "

I think 'sort of gay Grange Hill' is a fair summary. It's really good, is adapted for television from a graphic novel, so the work of the colourist is good and ties in with those kinds of sensibilities, great soundtrack too. Given the 'gay Grange Hill' vibes it does have some storylines that involve some homophobia and transphobia and bullying, but overall it's quite positive. It's really quite touching and uplifting.

I'm definitely in the minority on this one.

No, I found it meh. Like eating torn off bits of cardboard whilst chained to a radiator - fills your tummy but not exactly a succulent Chinese meal.

It's structured like you would a genuine mystery, except it's already shown you all its cards (title, contributors, etc).

No, I agree. I already said that it’s really poorly made, and very boring for most of its run. I found something of value from the honesty of the main protagonist discussing something that must have been unimaginably painful to find out. But that doesn’t detract from the documentary itself being done very badly

Welcome to the Punch - terrible film. Mark Strong, James McAvoy, Andrea Riseborough, Daniel Kaluuya and David Morrissey can't save the lumpen script

Unfrosted - Apparently this got bad reviews but I liked it. A comedy fable about the invention of pop tarts , tied in with lore about Nasa, the cold war and Jan 6 insurrection. More enjoyable than eating a pop tart.

And the Diplomat has been overtaken by events. A shame because it's good all round - especially the faux-Nicola Sturgeon last night. "Demmies" (by analogy with "Trekkies") will still lap it up, even more so after last Tuesday.

I finally got around to watching Mountain Queen.

I actually think that anyone who does mountain climbing is a bit fucking hatstand - but what an amazing woman Lhakpa Sherpa is!

I have a complicated relationship with this film. There are flashes of excellence in there.

I'm not going to compare it to S1 because other than the fact that I enjoyed it, I can't remember that much about it, but I am very much enjoying S2 of The Diplomat.

On season 5 (or part 5, as it's called) of Money Heist. We'd basically forgotten to watch it after 4.

It's beyond parody at this stage and a shame that the most interesting characters were killed off

Still, we'll stick with it to the bitter and (no doubt) ridiculous end.

I have been watching and enjoying more than S1 because it was just less silly, more restrained and thus somewhat, almost, believable. And then I got to that episode. Which was doing fine, even if there was a good ten minutes that were north but trying to show off Scottish scenery. And then it got to the end.... And I would like to withdraw my comment re 'not silly' and especially 'believable' - no matter what qualifiers I had put on the word.
