Re the three body problem problem, I think this sums it up. It certainly explains the bits that jar on me. I did think it was a bit weird and hacky that everyone already knew each other. I'm quite glad to find out that's not the case in the book. I'm definitely going to have a go at the Chinese series, maybe even the books (though I have such a looooong book backlog, it will be months before I will ever get around to them).

Instead, it’s science fiction with a cheap-TV glaze on top. It’s boring, distracting, and, worst of all, kills the show’s momentum in its genuinely exciting moments. It’s hard to care about Raj and Auggie’s squabbles over the morality of killing people when the alternative is complete eradication, or spending three episodes on Jin’s love triangle when we only spent one on a massive boat getting cut into little pieces.

^ 3 body problem: The boat slicing (watched last night) was visually striking blah blah - but honestly, couldn't they find a cheaper, less brutal way to retrieve the hard drive? Especially when "The Lord" :hmm: allowed it to be easily decrypted anyway?
=====================
I watched Nyad at the start of the year (about incredible swimmer Diana Nyad) and I thought it was ok - an incredible feat. I watched the documentary with the real Diana and her partner, Bonnie: The Other Shore and now I'm thinking why did they even bother making the movie?

This documentary was so much better - and the real people were more charismatic and interesting than Bening & Foster. Nyad is such a force of nature there's no actress in this world that can do her justice. I suppose it was a good way to advertise the documentary which was made 10 years ago. :D I thought the documentary also gave a better insight into what drove her to not giving up.

They didn't know 'the lord' allowed it to be easily decrypted until they had it. It also wasn't easily decrypted until they were allowed to easily decrypt it. They also didn't know that the aliens had abandoned comunication/association with the boat and they did not know the aliens did not mind them having the drive. All they knew was that nano fibre technology was something the aliens were afraid of, so it might work getting past their influence where normal procedures might not. Initially they did not think it had worked.

Actually the extreme brutality of slicing the boat is just typical human behaviour so, it makes sense (it just brought Palestine-Israel to mind). That's literally why the message was sent in the first place. We are fucking awful to one another and she wanted it to stop.

The theme song for the Chinese version is growing on me - it gets played with the closing credits

They also didn't want to damage the drive.
Don't ask me how they knew/hoped the nano fibres would not touch /damage it.
It is something skipped over quickly, but.... the nanofibres cut so smoothly that if they did make it through the casing it should be easily repairable

Fair enough, though daft as they have zero idea what it is made of and how complex it is. They later say they can't risk even trying to take any of it apart.

Yeah, this is why I was saying some of it doesn't really make sense, its poorly explained in various places, with just enough to make me think its plausible and be able to come up with a rationalisation.

I've started the Chinese version now. I love how they go into much more detail about the science and philosophy (yay for Russell's inductive turkeys!). But it looks way cheaper and, god, their version of Benedict Wong is so slappable.

I'm on the second to last one. The human drama/soap like conversations are super tedious. It's heartening to know the original didn't include this faff. Practically a whole episode wasted.

Yeah agree. Ok the five friends were 'the brilliant ones' but Raj is annoying and superfluous. I would have happily had his character cut.

I think I might read the books, but I'm not going to bother with the series.

I've already inflicted Masters of the Air on Mrs Idris, and am going to try to get her to watch For All Mankind. Three Body Problem might be a bridge too far.

What we did watch was the Outfit. Tailor tangles with Chicago gangsters. Twists and turns keep you guessing to the very end. Mark Rylance stars.

Script was a bit clunky in places, and it felt very like a film version of a stage play (which I don't think it was), but I think it delivered the goods. Worth your time, I'd say.

It was a script that wasn't quite fully developed, but hey had the cast to hand and some the after a different shoot Had finished. It's one of those hat needed a few more run throughs to really work out, but didn't have time. Its enjoyable, but any movie that has to spend the last five minutes explaining what happened in the previous 90 has its issues

Well I'm finding The Gentleman quite entertaining.

It absolute tosh - and Guy fucking Ritchie tosh at that so nuclear levels of tosh - but it's stupid fun.

Peter Serafinowicz scouse accent sounded hilariously dodgy which is bizarre given he is an actual scouser 😆
I'm half an hour into the first episode of The Gentlemen, and It looks absolutely and predictably dire, but my OCD is telling me I'll be awake until I've finished the whole series, some time tomorrow.
I don't care how bad it is, I'm enjoying it.

Surely it simply boils down to whether one likes Guy Ritchie in general or not? I by no means liked everything he’s done, but certainly enjoyed Lock Stock…, Snatch, and to a lesser degree, The Gentlemen film this is based on, and a couple other films.

If one thinks the above films are crap, then it goes without saying they’re not going to find this any less shit. But if you liked those films, the dialogue and other main themes of this series are in no way any different, let significantly worse, and whereas each to their own, I wouldn’t be able to reconcile someone saying they found Lock Stock a very enjoyable film but this series complete shit.

His first two films were enjoyable at the time, but the racism in Snatch... find it difficult to watch these days. Quite liked his take on Sherlock Holmes, don't recall it being too controversial. Apart from it upsetting the purists, of course.

Oh yeah, I forgot about his Sherlock Holmes film, which I thought was great, actually.

I do agree about the Irish Traveller stereotyping. There are also various pi**y outings in Lock Stock.

The word "pikey" became in vogue again. This lad at work, who previously I rarely had interactions with, started using it & told me Pitt's Irish accent was great.
