Netflix recommendations

I think I'm the only person who thought it was shite.
I wasn't particularly impressed. I thought the first episode showed promise with the curveball ending, but it never really followed though. The interesting moral dilemmas that could have arisen were always given an easy way out by the writers, (usually in advance) rather than letting realism hit hard. Some of the games just didn't make sense either. Good performances by some actors, but ultimately crap. I'm not at all interested in a second series.

Just done the first one. I forgot how it was a 'family' show. We are all talking and commenting throughout. As a keen runner I was very excited to see the first round, but really think they dropped the ball on the 'stats'. Maybe it wouldn't have meant enough to regular viewers? Maybe it would have been too messy and confusing with so many contestants? Maybe they didn't want to give away the clear winners/winner until the end?
There was no final total of meters run from the last six. What I did manage to compute was that, if was in some bizarre alternative reality one of the 100 contestants, I would have been a contender. Hooray.
So I ran the numbers for this first ep and something doesn't quite add up.
According to my own stats, I would have come third in round one and fourth in round two (impossible to tell how round three came out). Even if I took round one at an easy pace I would still have made it into round two. . . . There must be something much harder about running on those treadmills than normal running that is not mentioned (I am by no stretch of the imagination an athletic type). They had track and field athletes and football players kicked out in the first round.

It’s like permanently running uphill, I believe.

Ah yes. I have had a look. That makes a lot more sense.
I did hear one of the contestants mention that manual treadmills were harder than motor ones, but I am aware that electric treadmills are super easy compared to the real world.
. . .But yeah, looks like it could be comparable to running as much as an 8% grade hill (depending on the make or treadmill), which is not insignificant. If so, I think I would have liked to have known that before they started. . . I just kept thinking 'these guys look sooo sloooow'.

We watched the first two episodes of 3 Body Problem and it’s certainly very intriguing and watchable, even though some events leave me wondering wtf is going on. Anyway, will continue watching. I hope it doesn’t do
a ‘Lost’ on us and the bizarre happenings we’ve seen so far end up making sense, but recommended.

It's a series of books. I have not seen the Netflix one yet (did watch a bit of the Chinese TV series). I assume it sticks to the story.

Couldn’t comment on that. But as someone who hasn’t read the books and has nothing to compare the TV adaptation with, it is very watchable so far.

Look forward to this, but currently engrossed in that western noir sci-fi over on Amazon...

I'm enjoying it also.

Watched Uncut Gems the other day. Intense. Adam Sandler is brilliant. His character is frustrating, hateful, pathetic and utterly selfish. Great film.
Agree. I actually hate him as an actor in general whenever he’s in a comedic role because I think he’s in indescribable unfunny comedy actor, and far more cringeworthy when he’s involved writing or producing of his films. Not just unfunny, but weird as well.

But he’s brilliant in this, and you should also check his new drama/ sci-fi film Spaceman also on Netflix. The film itself is a bit Marmite but his performance undoubtedly quite good.

I haven't seen Uncut Gems, but I thought he was excellent in Spaceman, which I thoroughly enjoyed even though it was a bit slow and thoughtful compared to my usual viewing preferences.

Another frequently comedic actor who shone in something a bit different and more serious on Netflix recently was Steve Carell in serial killer drama The Patient (co-starring with Domhnall Gleeson, who is always good value IMO)

And of course, he's outstanding in Punch Drunk Love and is more than holding his own in The Meyerowitz Stories.

Pepsi: Where's My Jet?

It's a 4 part documentary but the episodes are only half an hour apiece. Really good fun story about an advertising campaign that went badly wrong for Pepsi in the 90s and got them sued by a kid who insisted they owed him a Harrier jet fighter!

Great characters, bonkers premise, and very funny.

Just watched the first episode, good so far.

I think what I mean is that it already has a fully formed story and should not succumb to the problems of Lost and Battlestar Galactica etc if they stick close to the core script.

Watching the new Japanese drama 'Extremely Inappropriate'. . . Starts like a regular period comedy, then includes time travel (not fully explained) and goes a bit 90's Miike Takashi style comedy with musical elements and weirdness. I'll probably stick with it, the other Japanese dramas my family are currently watching are well below par.

I'm four episodes in to 3 Body Problem now, and I'm fully hooked. I'm ok with the premise. I'm buying it ok. That had worried me at first. Terrific acting, great dialogue, really well drawn characters and interactions between them. And it sprawls across space and time in a very well done and pleasing way.

Reminds me of Station 11 in its scope and ambition.

If anyone fancies over 2 hours of US Navy recruitment ad gung-ho ridiculousness with a slightly nostalgic bent, Top Gun: Maverick is currently on Netflix (in case you missed it on Channel 4 last night).
The visuals and effects are amazing. Somewhat dubious message, heavy doses of "oh, really? :hmm: and completely faceless "hostiles" it goes without saying.

I watched it this afternoon, overall I enjoyed it, cpl of lazy hours on a Sunday afternoon.

I saw it on a plane some time ago. It's a solid enough straightforward film. Not something I'm in a rush to watch again though.

I got a bit of a nostalgia kick out of it, it has to be said.
I mean I don't understand how he can keep basically nicking expensive aviation hardware just to prove that he's an awesome pilot, I think IRL he'd have at best ended up discharged if not in some sort of military prison :D
When they were doing the mission briefing and talking about the difficulty flying towards the target and having to get a direct hit on a small spot, my brain went "I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than 2 meters"
