I wouldn’t be able to reconcile someone saying they found Lock Stock a very enjoyable film but this series complete shit.
Weeelllll. I have not seen love stock for many many years, but I did think it was enjoyable. I also thought (episode one of) the gentleman was an absolute pile of shit.

Maybe give it another couple of episodes, when new subplots and plenty new players are introduced to the story- as it is the case with Ritchie’s films as well; Lock Stock doesn’t click properly until past the first half hour imo.

It only gets worse. I quit at Episode 3. It makes Lock Stock look like Citizen Kane.

Any charm, energy and style Ritchie did possess was already draining away with Snatch (which I also enjoyed).

The Gentlemen was recently described as being "half-ideas Guy Ritchie had in a 3am taxi from Soho to Wiltshire".

Half-ideas is pushing it.

Is The Three Body Problem worth watching if you’re an ignoramus? I just looked up what an actual three body problem is and did not understand it all as it involves diagrams of squiggles and algebra.

I'm on episode six and so far they haven't talked about the actual science behind what's happening that much, and what was mentioned was explained in simple terms that were easy to understand.

The actual Three Body Problem is totally irrelevant to understanding/enjoying the Netflix series, you just have to get the impact it has on the aliens living on their planet.

Oh my god! It's so exciting! There's so much going on and I dont follow any of it. It must be brilliant.

Katie Spencer at SKY news is also a terrible reviewer. She says things like 'This stars the Lovely Annette Benning' and very little else. I don't know if Annette Benning is lovely or not, but does it matter? What is the film about? Is it any good in your opinion? Someone said to her that they didn't like Oppenheimer and that is was too long; she basically replied with 'Well, it's about something important, and historical, and it's epic'....erm, ok then.

If you've ever enjoyed an episode from the US Law & Order / SVU universe, you're not squeamish about true-crime-sploitation, have a relatively high tolerance for self-boosting cop talk and you love listening to old school Noo Yawk accents, then Homicide: New York (made by Dick Wolf, he of the L&O franchise) is horribly compelling, punchily edited and rather addictive. Not quite tacky-ghoulish (though it gets near it) but this is not a source of considered big-picture social policy analysis either. Homicide-the-legendary-Baltimore-set-series it ain't.

Scoop

I'm probably the only person who hasn't seen the Emily Maitlis/Prince Andrew interview. But I enjoyed this account of the interview being set up.

Will Andrew watch it and think he comes across well in it?

Watched this last night and enjoyed it. Thought the performances were good, not caricatured or mannered.

Also further solidified my view that the monarchy is an odd unhealthy, and largely redundant institution.

The series only covers the very very basic ideas. You definitely don't have to be in the least bit clever to understand what is occurring. I was actually a bit disappointed in the lack of hard science.

watched Two Popes last night. a film with anthony hopkins and jonathan pryce playing the most recent two popes. fun in its light hearted depiction of both men bickering and figuring out where they both stand on aspects of theology. doubt how true it is (despite being 'based on true events') but hopkins and pryce are both very good in it.

Four episodes into Ripley and it’s magnificent. The kind of television that makes 99% of other television look pallid, paltry and pointless. Every single shot has a purpose, every camera angle has been chosen for a reason, there are motifs (stairs, hands) that are used as recurring metaphors, the acting is incredible and, best of all, the intense emotion is almost entirely implied and behind the eyes. Magnifico.

I watched Scoop. It was quite enjoyable.

Gillian Anderson was a little creepy as Emily Maitlis; I kept getting hints of Thatcher.

What is it with people taking their dogs to work?
