Netflix recommendations

Half way through the 3-episode adaptation of Decline and Fall. In spite of having Jack Whitehall in it, it’s reasonably watchable.
I thought episode one was ok. . . . but I didn't come away feeling the need to watch anymore. Would have probably been better as a film.

If you thought it was okay you should consider finishing it, at least as an adequate filler. I am still amazed it turned out to be decent at all. And credit where it’s due, they had the sense to constrain it to three episodes, which works fine, rather stretching it to five or six as it’s often the case.

My family watches a fair bit of Japanese TV on Netflix, but I have recently found most if it varying from poor to just plain irritating. . . . However the new show (with the uninspiring name) House Of Ninjas, is actually a slightly more polished affair (as opposed to the usual flat plastic by numbers trash) with some rounded / fleshed out characters that elevates it far above the slightly absurd and childish premise. It's not cheap 'secret Ninja family' comedy (or a comedy at all).
This could have been terrible, but I'm actually on board for a change.

On episode 3 and we’re reasonably enjoying it ourselves. Not perfect and the pace is uneven, but good enough to stick to so far.

I didn't enjoy vivant, trillion yen (or whatever its called), my got married as a job and a few others that I forget the name of. . . But my wife seems to like them all.
I did really love the Netflix original, Sanctuary. That was really good. It had a touch of the Miike Takashi's about it.

I know this is old news but we're enjoying "Pepsi, where's my jet?" which is a tad dragged out more than necessary but entertaining never the less. Only recently brought to my attention after learning about the Pepsi "Number Fever" debacle in the Philippines. We're half way through so don't spoil if he gets the jet or not.

I'm slightly worried that I have over egged my praise. I'm only one episode in and it was just a knee jerk reaction to seeing a Japanese show on netflix that isn't overwhelmingly terrible.

I don't understand how this is a series. Content wise it's fairly decent 10 minute you tube that could easily be zazzed up to make a fun 45 minute doc. . . but four 30minute plus episodes? I found the constant US style repetitiveness and lack of actual content overwhelmingly irritating and bailed after the first one.

Finished "one day". really well made and affecting. I admit to having a bit of lump in my throat by the end. Obejct lesson in how "show not tell" - really top writing and performances so you really got what the charachters were feeling - despite what they said often being very different. Just felt very real. And you could actaully see why these two loved each other. And you liked Dex - even thought he was a posh twat - for me a very difficult barrier to overcome.

Totally agree, we finished it y/day and both loved it, one of the best things we’ve watched in ages, loved the writing and acting and had the same lump in the throat.

I binged and loved 'One Day'.

I loved how both the characters, were so reluctant and frightened of being vulnerable, but masked it in very different ways.
What am I missing? On the recommendation of this thread and the billing as a 'bingeable comedy' and I thought I would give it a go yesterday.
It's definitely not a comedy and the posho guy is really irritating, making it a difficult watch for me.
It did vaguely remind me of my student youth hook ups.

Does it pick up? Or should I just tap out if I didn't like the first one?

Anyone else enjoyed Killer Paradox ? (Korean accidental serial killer comedy that becomes a lot darker as it goes along)

It's a romance more than a comedy. I'd say if you found Leo Woodall irritating in the first episode his descent into full on obnoxious is going to do your head in. The whole point of the series is that the cast is much better suited than it was for the film so if you can't get into their interactions and inability to put their feelings for each other across, then it's probably not for you.

I don't understand this section.

The film adaptation of the novel is shit, the cast is shit, the acting is terrible, and Hathaway's fake northern accent is cringeworthy.
The series is good, with a good cast. I was dubious at first but it grew on me, despite it not really being my sort of genre.
It's not really a romance either tbh, more about the waxing and waning of friendship over the years. It's not a rom-com or comedy.

Either you like it or you don't, I'm not going to try to convince you to watch it if it's not your thing - it's often difficult to know what you might like as our tastes are so different, so I'm not going to say you'll enjoy it because who knows - but if it doesn't grab you by episode 2, then life's too short to worry about it :)

^ ignore this if you haven't seen it already. It's pretty good with some excellent bits :p
I fucking loved it.
I think it's the sort of thing not everyone is going to "get".
N hated the ending and resented that he'd looked up from his phone to watch it.
I thought it was brilliant, about the distraction popular media provides vs. real shit hitting the fan issues.
Maybe a bit too obvious a message is its main fault.

It had bad dialogue and couldn’t work out what it wanted to be, was it an eco film, a terror film or a philosophical film. The only good character was Mahershala Ali who couldn’t save the film by himself

I think it knew exactly what it wanted to be, and liked it for that reason. . . but I can understand how some of its audience might have found it difficult to digest / process / pigeon hole because of that.
I agree that the dialogue was running a bit close to the cringey at times, but I liked the films style and approach and went along with the flow.
