Netflix recommendations

Yeah I honestly found myself losing interest a bit and kind of forgot that I was in the middle of watching it. Which is a shame, because clearly it is a big budget production.

Will give it another go though and report back.

It's one of those shows that could have been excellent. An interesting and little known part of (pre) WW2, should be a slam-dunk hit, but they've made it in that stupid semi-comedic, cartoony style, rather than as a serious drama. The other show fucked-up by a similar production style was The Singapore Grip.

Yeah really my main impression of it was that it was a bit too light in style for the subject matter.
Whilst I don't think everything needs to be desaturated and serious all the time and in many ways am grateful for TV productions having moved on from that almost sepia toned and everything has to be like that thing that was going on for a few years, there's kind of a time and place for that juxtaposition of bright and comedic with really dark subject matter, and I am not sure this (as a horrendous event, rather than something fictional) was it.
I will watch the rest of it because yep not all the way through it yet, might be wrong of me to form a strong opinion just yet but I was starting to feel slightly uncomfortable with the levity of some of it. Could be that all works out as "this is how some people were partying while this shit went down" comment which might have some value in it, so will watch til the end in case it turns out to be a pearl hidden in there.

Keep me posted. I'm binning it unless you tell me it's worth persevering with.

Just finished Mr Queen. This is the Korean TV show we should have all been talking about. . . not that bloody squid nonsense.

Is it a comedy? A period drama? Life on Mars? (Barely). . . . I love how the main concept (a cocky master-chef travels back in time and inhabits the body of a future queen) is almost inconsequential yet somehow essential.

That sounds awesome, thanks for the heads-up!

Tbf, the real must see Korean series is the magnificent "Kingdom", but will check this out when it comes to Netflix.

I started watching Beef and first two episodes are damn near perfect!!! Dark humour and satire. Blurb says "cross between White Lotus and Parasite". If it carries on being this good it's going to win tons of awards! Great acting too.

I found this review just now... Beef review – Ali Wong’s dark, existential thriller is deliciously subversive

I was going to watch this, but my Netflix kept playing up and refusing to play more than ten seconds at a time.

I've now gone off the idea of watching it at all after reading about the lead actor

He plays a pretty nasty character on it... That article says he's not a rapist, but made a bad joke about it. If I was not to watch things because of shitty things that actors have said, there's probably a lot I wouldn't watch... ;)

The character he played is entirely irrelevant. he made a joke of it some time after he was hauled up about it. Even if he was then telling the truth, he sounds an idiotically nasty little twat.. Or a rapist.

I find it hard to get into anything where the lead character are constantly on their phones and the film makers do that thing where they display whats on their phones on your screen. Like this....

I know its just showing modern life but I'm fucking sick of looking at text messages or looking at people on mobile phones. When i watch a film or series I want escapism from that.

ok. Don't watch it then ;)

This has probably already had a mention before, I don't watch much telly, but I'm really enjoying War Sailor. One left to go with supper tonight.

I love Odenkirk and Lloyd and was really looking forward to this. . . . but I found it just . . . ok. Better than most flims it is similar to, but probably only because of Odenkirks and Llyods performances. I was at least expecting a far more interesting story.

So yes. . it killed 1.5 hours, but that was about it.

I am just starting this now..and I was hooked by the first few minutes ..with the kitten.

Eta yep..its gone ott. But I'll watch it.

This has been a pet hate of mine for a while now. Not least because I can’t make out what most of the text messages displayed say. We have a 42’ TV, which is not exactly small, but apparently not fit for purpose to read text messages shown on most shows.

Not everyone has a 65-inch monster TV or watches programmes on a laptop ffs

Yeah, very good that. Different from the usual Atlantic War CGI bang fests.

I owe you a post about smoking, will get on it this week honest.

I'll get back into this but I found the first episode rather dull. I've been meaning to go back and finish it off but keep finding other stuff to watch.

Absolutely this, I've got a 42" TV which looks big in my sitting room, but I'm also over 50 and all that means wrt eyesight, I don't want to have to have glasses on just so I can see that.

And let's be clear here, I rely quite a lot on subtitles cos of my auditory processing disorder, but a lot of that ^ sort of thing is tiny text in comparison, it's not accessible at all.

I found it on kodi and then realised it was Netflix. At first I was a bit meh because its subbed but our lass loves a scandi drama so I stuck with it. Glad I did really. Of course you can have it dubbed in English but she'd of called me an uncultured northern monkey if I'd pressed that button.

It had a bit of an odd ending but it made sense in relation to the conceptof the main theme. I'm glad I watched it though, in Liverpool there's a great affection for the merchant fleet. Especially the Norwegians. Its quite harrowing when they stack up the numbers of merchant sailors who died in WW2. They had no choice but to stay at sea. It was sea or on the run away from home or bird for many and they covered that well in the programme.

Anyway if I say any more I'll spoiler it.

Speaking of Scandi drama I'm off to see our big Viking friend tomorrow. Should of tagged you into the trip.

The Diplomat

Wish-fulfilment for silly north American liberals whose hearts were broken by Hillary's loss.

This is surprisingly and annoyingly good, better than it has any right to be.

The gimmick: career girlboss diplomat is getting ready to get back to Afghanistan, but is then redirected to that other disaster zone, the United Kingdom. She has to bring her annoying husband, a career maverick diplomat with her.

Starting it now, decent watchable stuff as far the first fifteen minutes of any show can suggest.

I was rather amused to see the contrasting reviews by the Telegraph and the Guardian, transparently based solely on the alleged political leanings of the show. The Torygraph actually describes it as an anti-Tory, UK-bashing series :D

I want to make it absolutely clear that I am not holding you personally responsible for the word that I have bolded because it seems like it's come out of a blurb for the show, but really wtf.

Women aren't girls and can be bosses (often just as nasty as their male counterparts), not a different type of boss that requires differentiation by use of a gender signifier (and a diminutive/infantilising one at that).

Again not saying that is your fault and not having a go at you :)

I also want to make it absolutely clear that when I say that sort of thing it is not because I want to have a go at someone and say they are a bad person because I don't think that is true for a moment and I don't always use the right or accepted terminology myself, if I haven't twigged on to it.
So that isn't me going "wah I hate you, you're a bad person", it's me going "consider what that term means". I also understand there may be language differences.
And I completely think it came off an advertising blurb for the show :)

Might well try this. Reminded of the show where Pauline Collins played an ambassador to Ireland....

In the meantime, finished the final season of Narcos - Mexico. Superb and shocking.
like the parent show, they managed to keep the final season gripping, even with the loss of the main character

It's better than that.
She doesn't want the job

It's been a thing for years now, it originally came from a different TV show or an autobiography or something. Has been used in a few ways since then - started out being meant as a positive thing iirc then changed to being more of an insult - but not usually just to describe a woman who happens to be a boss.
