The Law According to Lidia Poet. A period mystery mini series about the first Italian woman to become a lawyer, solving murders whilst fighting misogyny-fuelled opposition to her career aspirations by peers and relatives alike.

Each episode seems to feature a different case, and whereas I suspect they might be fictionalised, she was a real figure and her overall struggle to beat the system is represented. Whereas not amazing, it’s actually quite quirky and easy watching, and well produced.

Lockwood and Co. A British supernatural teen offbeat comedy series based on the books of the same name. Teen-oriented but also adult-friendly, it’s actually very watchable so far, actually :)

I enjoyed it, but I'm really struggling to figure out when it's set. A lot of it seems modern, but the music is heavily 1980s and the cars in the set dressing (aside from the modern Black Cabs they use) are all 80s as well. Someone on the crew has a lovely old 635CSi they like to get into the background of a lot of exterior shots.

Yeah, Lockwood is not bad, the actress playing the girl is particularly good - I can see her going on to a good career. I interpreted it as an alternate-timeline kind of earth set in something close to the present but where technology has not advanced as far, probably due to the discovery of ghosts. But now you mention it, maybe it is meant to be set in an alternate 80s?

that's deliberate.
the idea is that when ghosts started appearing in the 70s / 80s that's caused stagnation. kept things analogue. so even though it's set in 2020s you've these trappings from 30 years ago.

Ahhh maybe. I did wonder why in the first episode one of the blokes was reading a mint condition early 80s 2000ad (would have to be a reproduction if not stored in sealed darkened conditions for 40 years).

Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari

Fairly standard documentary about an eruption on an offshore New Zealand volcano.

Interesting for me as Mrs Shoes and I blithely visited it some years ago

Finished The Law According to Lidia Poet. Pretty good, actually. Recommended. Worth checking her bio afterwards- she led a very interesting life and was a catalyst for women’s rights in Italy.

As someone who likes to armchair study narcissists and the like I've started watching Inventing Anna. The acting is beyond woody.

I am watching Physical 100 a Korean competition to find the fittest and strongest. It is dubbed but OK. It is interesting to see how the different sports people compare and not always as I predict.

Don't watch it dubbed. Why would anyone watch it dubbed?
I didn't realise this was even an option. It seems weird to do that with a program like this.

Physical 100 made me want to be Korean. They’re all so nice, and supportive, and genuinely rooting for each other. Even at the final with loads of money at stake.
I have only seen a couple of mean/annoying people so far and I think they might be knocked out by now (I have only just finished the sand bridge thing). Low point was the guy who chose a woman to go one on one with and then taunted her, never gave her the respect of a straight up game.
I must have missed the tik tok guy being knocked out too. . . he seemed like a bit of a twat.

In nearly all UK reality shows we have come to expect everyone being horrible to each other. Sadly this is usually because it's what the show creators think we want (or think is entertainment). From my experience of making TV all of this is manufactured / manipulated. When come dine with me first started it was a genuinely nice and gentle show about amateur cooking enthusiasts who met up with other like minded people in the local area. They all had a generally positive experience, encouraged each other and stayed friends after the show. . . somewhere along the line the cooking went out the window and people were cast as 'characters' to rub each other up the wrong way. On site producers were bullied into stirring things up on location, filming was edited to make things look even worse. I genuinely used to like come dine, it was a gentle, positive uplifting show, but it later became so toxic that it was unbearable to watch. Same can be said of Big Brother etc. It really was an interesting social experiment for the first series at least.

It's sad that toxicity is what we have come to expect to see when people interact on reality TV, it's disappointing that this is what we have come to associate with competitive entertainment. It probably does have an effect on peoples attitudes in real life to some extent. Whatever happened to sportsmanship?

Hopefully we will see more shows like Physical 100, (which despite still being clearly quite carefully stage managed in some areas,) highlights positive competitive human interactions.

Side note . . . I still can't get over what an absolute bastard it must be to edit. Everyone has a microphone, there are a crazy amount of cameras and sound to sync / trawl through. . . then they have clearly shot interviews for all contestants before each event, and after each event. All of these are pepperd throughout while the action takes place. I'd love to see a behind the scenes documentary.

If I’d watched it dubbed, I would never have learned the most important Korean word, which appears to be “waaaaaaaa!”
I have learned "buri buri buri buri" which I think means hurry the fuck up. . . . and of course "bei", which I assume means 100.
Previously I only knew "annyeonghaseyo" from 'Adventure Time' and 'Crash Landing On You'.

I didnt know not dubbed was an option.
It usually is on Netflix. Select “Audio and Subtitles” on screen.
As far as I am aware, if you have previously watched shows with subs it will automatically select that option on anything you watch.
I 'think' it quite specifically remembers your selection for each language. for instance my daughters English and Japanese selections all come up in their original language with no subs, but if she watches something korean it will be with subs. . .my Japanese selections automatically include subs.

On Prime, if I flick the language to Japanese EVERYTHING is in Japanese (english shows are dubbed in Japanese if available) until I change it back.

I don't know if any of you know of that "Anna Delvey" story. I was pretty drop jawed when I was following it when it came out following it on YouTube but despite the series coming off as pretty tacky I have two episodes left and have to say I am thoroughly engrossed.

I can't decide if I admire the woman for having the balls to go out there and do what she did or hate her for refusing to see how she hurt and upset so many people. I can't but help laugh at how nonchalant and deluded she was about her actions. A true marmite character for sure.

I congratulate the woman playing the lead role of Anna. She has her mannerisms down to a virtual tee. Great watch IMO.

I'm really enjoying Triptych at the moment. Recommend viewing if you can get passed the subtitles and the occasionly annoying soundtrack.

For those with kids, a big recommendation for new animated series My Dad the Bounty Hunter. It’s a space comedy adventure about a man from Earth who unbeknown to his family is an intergalactic bounty hunter, and one day his kids inadvertently hitch a hike to space with him.

It is very funny and entertaining, with good animation and lots of homage nods to various sci-fi films and characters. Adult friendly as well.

We went and ended up binging the above entire series in one go. Absolutely great fun and excellent weekend entertainment. :D

Don’t be put off by the fact that this is a kids’ show. It’s just as good for grownups. Well made and a great and perfectly paced story, and packed with genuinely funny moments.

I just showed my daughter the trailer and she just said "nope".
Oh well.
Though to be honest the trailer really didn't grab me at all either and it doesn't look very nice / stylish.

Trailer is shit. As to the style, this is as good as Star Wars or Guillermo del Toro animation. You just need to get them to space, which happens before the first episode is over. From then on it’s brilliant.

Watching 'All Quiet on the Western Front' - and not really doing much for me. I don't really like these 'poetic' style war films - ditto 'Dunkirk' remake.

I'm also finding the Netflix standard accents of the actors really irritating... have they figured out this is the accent most suited to an international market? Sorry.
I coulhn't believe the powerful butterfly scene was dropped for a final futile death or glory charge that wasn't in the book or original film. It was visually impressive but as a film I preferred 1917 and loevd They Shall Not Grow Old
