Neo Nazis in Germany

Yes, that was one of the bits I was less convinced by. Dunno what German gun laws are like but can't imagine they're super lenient. I liked the bit about the maces and crossbows as well.
It was more the bit about ""Wishful thinking, those are impossible demands"—all the Germans told me the AfD growing into power was impossible as recently as five years ago, they are literal Nazis but they have offered, in fact, an alternativ für Deutschland, it's the worst alternative but it's an alternative, and in the past 10 years they put the "impossible" alternative of National-Socialism squarely within the possible, what's your alternative?" that stuck in my head.

The 'get on with it, don't rely on anyone but yourself and your community'-sentiment is refreshing.

Although i don't fully agree with the 5 years ago bit....it's been long coming, and the whole german anti covid movement only made it more mainstream and acceptable.

I quite liked it
I mean, the lefty gun ranges stuff is something I've only really encountered in a US context, and my reaction to that has always been "well, I don't inherently love it but I guess people do what makes sense in their context". Is there enough gun ownership in Germany for that to make sense there? Just had a look at wikipedia, and learned that apparently "For people over 18 years of age, a license is not required to own a single-shot percussion firearm developed before 1 January 1871, or to own and carry any muzzle-loader with a flintlock or earlier design. However, the purchase of black powder or similar in order to actually use the firearms requires a license."

Interesting example of the German state banning a far right publication yesterday:

Wow, it seems like ex-lefties who've gone super right wing really like starting magazines called Compact.

Review of a new book on the NSU:

This from 2020, examining investigatory leads not followed, and the involvement of state actors such as Andreas Temme (‘Little Adolf’) of the Hessen LfV, is quite interesting:

Review of a new book on the NSU:

On further examination it looks like the hardback was published in May under different names either side of the Atlantic - as Look Away by Grand Central (Hachette), and as White Terror by Mudlark (HarperCollins). There will be a paperback of White Terror in January.

I used to see this on sale in Halle, and it was obvious nasty shit.

I was surprised to see that the Compact founder was involved in the split from Junge Welt to form Jungle World. The former paper is a diehard tankie rag that dates back to the DDR, the latter is basically for people who wish they were US Democrats - I remember a homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg they published once. So what role was this "Jürgen Elsasser" playing there? And for whom?

What's the other one?
US Compact, mag started by two right-wing Catholics and a supposed Marxist, lots of names like Nina Power (now departed), Slavoj Zizek, Glenn Greenwald, Paul Embery:

Can't claim any special expertise, but the article says:

Jürgen Elsässer was born in 1957 and has been active in politics since the mid-70s. He was a member of the organisation Kommunistischer Bund, where he became elected to the leadership in 1989. The KB was originally one of the so called (broadly Maoist) K-Groups, but became an organisation of the unorthodox Marxist left during the 80s.

When the KB split over issues of how to deal with the newly united Germany, Elsässer initially sided with the anti-German minority. He was writing for the KB’s central organ Arbeiterkampf (Workers Struggle) before the split, then for Bahamas, konkret, Junge Welt. When Junge Welt split in 1997, he was one of the co-founders of Jungle World.

In the context of the wars in Yugoslavia, especially the war in Kosovo, he increasingly sided with the Serbian nationalist side, which lead to him being sacked from konkret. He gradually withdrew from his erstwhile anti-German convictions and increasingly adopted positions which were consistent with reactionary – but still “left-wing” – anti-Imperialism.

He became enamoured first with Milosevic, then Ahmadinejad and finally Putin, Trump and Orban. His world view became more and more dominated by far right conspiracy narratives, anti-Americanism, and anti-Semitic stereotypes of a ruling financial elite.

When congratulating Ahmadinejad to his “election victory” in Iran in 2008, he wrote about the Iranian opposition: “Disco chicks, Tehran drug junkies and the rent boys of finance capital want to party here. It’s a good thing that Ahmadinejad’s people are a bit vigilant here and have sent some of them to a darkroom.”

Being taken to the “darkroom” by Ahmadinejad’s henchmen meant imprisonment, abuse and torture for many oppositionists.

To me this quote was revealing what a nasty person Elsässer is. This was also the point in time where he was getting directly involved with the further-and-further political right.

In recent years, especially during the Corona pandemic and since the Ukraine war, he kept stepping up his “revolutionary” rhetoric, calling for an overthrow of the “regime”.

Good News Everybody

A top German neo-Nazi plummeted nearly 200 feet to his death while hiking on what is believed to be Adolf Hitler’s favorite mountain.

Andreas Münzhuber, 37, a senior member of the Bavaria faction of neo-Nazi group The Third Way, was climbing Untersberg mountain on a 30-person tour when he tripped on an exposed wet root and fell 196 feet down rocky terrain to his death on Sept. 29, German news outlets reported.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene after the fall but the far-right radical was killed instantly, Merkur reported.

This looks interesting, but I do not have time to read it.
I find the journey from left to right an interesting topic.
