Nationalism and Racism

tar1984

write a song, i'll sing along
Can anyone suggest good readings on the link between the two, if you can have one without the other etc?

I have Mosse, 'Racism and Nationalism' and Harris, 'Race and Nation'. Otherwise I have collected a shitload of info about racism and nationalism separately but not a lot about the relationship between them.

There Ain't no Black in the Union Jack: The Cultural Politics of Race and Nation by Paul Gilroy
"Genealogy Unbound: Reproduction and the Contestation of the Racial Nation" by Weinbaum in Wayward Reproductions: Genealogies of Race and Nation in Trans-Atlantic thought
Balibar and Wallerstein - Race, Nation, Class: Ambiguous Identities
Bell - Multicultural States: Rethinking Difference and identity
Cohen - Frontiers of Identity: The British and the Others

Basically anything around eugenics or asylum seekers/refugees/immigrants.

Awesome, thanks!

I already had a look at Balibar and Wallerstein, 'Race, Nation and Class'. It had a good piece from Balibar also called 'Racism and Nationalism' which I forgot to put in the OP.

The rest of them I've never seen and look like they'll be very helpful!

I'd have a good rummage around George M. Fredrickson, starting with The Comparative Imagination: On the History of Racism, Nationalism, and Social Movements, then Racism: A Short History - then his two books on how this stuff worked in practice (and in the round, not just in terms of one-way oppression): White Supremacy:A Comparative Study in American and South African History and Black Liberation: A Comparative History of Black Ideologies in the United States and South Africa (both here). There's loads more but this is stuff that will give you a good grounding for getting into the wider field(s).
