Misc steam railway, traction, station and rail-related news

Of course, these entitled tory twats rarely, if ever, travel by rail and when they do, some lackey will be taking care of the tickets ...

"Parker, nip down to the station an' get tickets to Brighton ... "

I was surprised to be able recognise that first image ...
Had a bit of a break, not quite a holiday, in that area a few years BC [looked it up - back in April 2016].
and enjoyed a ride on the railway and a walk around Swanage.

Imagine being a kid near Mangotsfield and seeing this kind of thing every day

These are all charging in an unused waiting room at my local station.

Assume they are some sort of battery powered … something! Any idea what they're used for as I know there’s a few railway industry alumni on here

There’s also a trolley in the same room presumably for transporting them to wherever they’re being used

I'll hazard a guess at something S&T related - possibly emergency power for the lamps in signals & connections to the signal [power] box.
{distributed UPS ?}

Thanks, I wondered if they were being used for engineering work at night?

Love that - reaction quite normal, even with railway-mad youngsters.

I've got a very similar shot of my younger brother, taken on the Bluebell when we were both still at school ...
Years later, he's still as railway-mad, despite working for various railway companies over the past several decades.

Ticket office closures .... I apprecite it is nothing to do with the government but that doesnt mean to say we cannot have a go at the.
I have of course signed a petition but I have now written to a number of people. to make things really easy here are the contact details....
I have also written to my MP (who is registered blind)

Wasn't sure where to put this but had to share it somewhere.

:)

i don't remember many women on the railways in that era, not in operational jobs that is. round my bit of S London, there were one or two who had gone on the railways in the (1939-45) war and stayed on, but don't remember seeing many younger women. from what i gather, the railways took quite a bit of dragging in to the later half of the 20th century...

Please complete this survey to support the Heritage Railways on the Isle of Man [it's only a few minutes of your time - a bit more if you make a longer contribution of your opinion at the end.

There's actually a vocal minority on the Island that want to close all of the lines, some even saying that they don't contribute to attracting the tourists and visitors ...
