Misc steam railway, traction, station and rail-related news

West Midlands. Day. Weekends (no chance I know) or days when I can use my lunch break. Water Orton is not far away and a freight hot spot but would rather go having a clue rather than hope for the best approach.
I don't know that area so can't add much to what Dogsauce already said. Test trains might be your best bet, but they often tend to run at night and also are fairly notorious for not sticking to their schedule, so there's a high risk of not seeing anything if you try and catch them at a specific time and place.

For anyone interested I've started a new thread about the proposed redevelopment of liverpool st station:

Engines must not enter the potato sidings.

BBC documentary from 1969 about the railways and railwaymen on lines running out of Sheffield; looking back to the age of steam and forward to managed decline.

I've just watched that!

The most expensive train journey ever?
I didn't realise they're retiring the bus offering. That's going to piss off those flying on a tight budget. With Ryanair sometimes offering £5 fares, imagine paying the same for a 1-mile rail transfer than for an overseas flight :D

Ok proper nerdy question, is there any easy way to find out what routes/times a class 37 is on, on the mainline. RTT doesn't seem to give loco numbers for most freight or STP services?
There’s a working tomorrow that’s passing through the midlands:

It‘s a class 37 hauling 11 TTA tanker wagons from storage in Yorkshire down to the Dean Forest railway for preservation, so a nice combination of vintage loco on vintage wagons. If my car wasn’t playing up I’d consider nipping over the bridge to see it arrive.

It’s booked for 37418 which is in the BR large logo livery.

Good news for those of us who might want to visit heritage railways by public transport; hope this trial is successful. I've never travelled on the Swanage line because it's not been connected to the mainline but this will make it much easier to get there.

They’ve done this before I’m sure. Maybe just in summer. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while. I’m not a trains enthusiast. There’s meant to be some great pubs along the route.

Beautiful line, some good engines, very picturesque.

Yes, it's been a long-term aspiration and they've run trials in the past. The traction and rolling stock were a lot better those previous times, but they had to be hired in at cost:

Square and Compass at the top of the steep hill from Corfe Castle is definitely worth a visit, although it's a bit of a slog. The no. 40 bus stops right outside, though.

This looks good - Epping, open every Saturday

Sorry, not been on here in ages.

I have been able to grab one going past the back of the house since, and went to Coleshill parkway last Monday where two were due to pass in an hour. Sadly I missed the first one which was travelling light coming back from Swansea after dumping some locos off for scrap as RTT failed to update and it went from behind just a few minutes ahead of schedule to about 18 in a few spots, so it went flying past as I was sat in the car.

Did manage to get the 2nd (and 3rd) as it was a test train, which also reversed here to go back to Derby.

I also got one on a heritage rail tour at Widney Manor

Splendid pic of the long closed Highgate station

Lovely pub that - wouldn't fancy the walk from Corfe Castle - that is a hell of a hill :D

The flying Scotsman is doing a trip from Bristol to Cornwall on the 30th in 2 weeks time.

Any idea how I get an approximate time for the pass through Teignmouth?

Elpenor - also bear in mind that network rail & other landowners are {getting} fed up with people trespassing to watch 4472 pass by ...

At one point, not that long ago, timings were not officially published in advance because of this problem. Indeed, there was a risk that she would get hidden away unless photers and others behaved themselves - despite how the rebuild had been funded.

Expect this has already been comprehensively covered somewhere upthread but just noticed that CTL Seal Ithink it was ( Youtube) have been commissioned to build two brand new locomotives from scratch, a Clan Class and a B17.Apparently there are no currently existing engines of either type and they hope to get rolling chassis completed in eighteen months and the whole project completed before the end of the decade.Looks lovely so far.
