'Middle Class' it's basically just a construct isn't it...

many of the pages were just people trying to get themselves class analysed and thereby missing the fucking point.

I was going to argue that attitudes to employment are actually ways that people think about class. And then I was going to tell littlebabyjesus about his life, obv.

Where would a self-employed window cleaner who rather likes his job fit into that analysis?

I don't think that works at all, tbh. I know an accountant who earns shit-loads - 80k or something like that - and hates his job, feels trapped (although enjoys the money) and is at the company's beck and call potentially seven days a week.

It's not as simple as you're making out. Many highly paid people in some ways have fewer freedoms in their work than people in low-paid work. I don't know how old you are, but I'm guessing that you're a few years younger than me. My attitude to my employment at the moment is that I have to keep working to pay the bills I have at the moment. Life was easier when I was probably your age and working in a badly paid job but with no debts or responsibilities.

Analyse class as a mass phenomenon that helps you to think about large-scale power relations by all means. But individualising it has no value.

I agree that I don't often think about class in my everyday life. I am a product of my upbringing, as is everyone, and it both gives me opportunities and restricts me.

Most often I think about class when I come across someone who is so very obviously of a different class to me and it seems to impact somehow on us getting something done.

What?

I was going to argue that people's attitude to employment - how easy it is to come by, how precarious their job is - is a way that class relations are directly and concretely THERE in the way that people think. In all honesty, my attitude to my job is that I just wandered into it, after registering at a temp agency ten years ago. But my income and status - as a middling administrator - is a result of my education and social capital. People without that could not just stumble into my job.

Everything else is in your mind.
