Mazda Owners thread

ETA: Topic starts weird because a bunch of users in the How to buy a second hand car? thread all seemed to purchase Mazda 3's around the same time and we started to hijack the thread, so content related to the cars and not the buying process got moved here.

Actually hash tag another question, or any other mazda 3 owners. Does your's have DAB? I've just read they don'y come with DAB, not a deal breaker but will be annoying to lose it, especially for Test Match Special, listening in a car on AM is painful. Although I'm reading something about Internet radio is on it instead! So is it a bluetooth or app link or something, and I end up eating my data allowance instead? (Not a problem I get nowhere near my data allowance anyway and already streamed plenty from google music/spotify etc)

Yes, I have dab and sat Nav stuff. The car has a removable SD card and this is how the sat nav is updated. It's easy to update but costs £50. How you check it's done, I know not, but ask the question.
as for the spare wheel, I'm on the lookout for a used space saver.

DAB was late 15, so mine doesn’t have it.

I have sat nav but previous owner didn’t update it in the three years so it’s 2014 data with no free updates. An SD card is 40 quid on EBay but it looks like it might be possible to hack it in for free. Legit is 180 euros for 3 years.

Or wait for the CarPlay/Android auto update so you can use a freebie Satnav.

Ok cool. This one includes the nav (which will prob never use not a fan of inbuilt systems much prefer google maps) This is a late 2014 so I guess I’ve missed out. Just had it as a given a car that age DAB would be standard!

I didn't think Mazda's had launched car play stuff for new cars just yet, yet alone roll it out for used cars. Not sure what it will offer though. My phone I can link to the info stuff I believe but haven't tried to yet.

They haven’t but the upgrade parts are available from China - one of the guys on the mazda3revolution forums had bought them. They’re just waiting for the v70 firmware to be released.

Just had a quick play with the sat Nav. Doesn't have post code input and stopped us from inputting our road....need to read manual/ have bigger play
Got phone paired easily mind.

PS she got some speed limits wrong. I can't remember the detail, but I know we were told to slow down when doing 40 in a 50 limit on the A3. Did she tell us the limit or just to slow down?

You can just enter the postcode manually into the "Town" field and select "Centre", if I remember correctly, just ignore the suggestions.

Check the version, it might be worth upgrading the SD card (plenty on ebay) or sideloading Android Auto depending on the version of the firmware. Or just wait for the official retrofit package which sounds like late this year or early next year.

Is it worth having a Mazda 3 owners thread, we seem to have hijacked the last few pages? Lazy Llama may even be able to merge all our posts straight into it to clean this thread up?

Yeah, wasn't sure where to start moving the posts so went for yours, sorry.

I'll try to have a look back through the "How to buy.." thread and move any others that are Mazda-
specific

I can't believe Urban has sunk to having it's very own Mazda thread :facepalm:
Or, more importantly, am I ashamed to be part of it
Tried reading the sat Navajo manual last night. Am none the wiser

Nah, it doesn't have a Watches forum unlike Pistonheads.

Which I do actually look through these days.
I gave up posting on PH as it inevitably made me angry. Now I like to casually glance at it sometimes to see what the worst possible opinion might be for any given news topic.

Mumsnet, on the other hand, turns out to be a very valuable source of information on house purchases, DIY, the building trade, etc etc.

Yeah, the news section can be full of real dickheads, it has to be said.

Get past those and it's still not bad.

The freedom to make barmy comments seems to have been extended to other threads outside NPE. Some pretty reactionary stuff comes up, and the encouragement to younger posters to get into vast amounts of debt for a car is awful.

I’m not really ‘into’ cars, which is why Pistonheads holds little to no appeal. There are several Mazda forums though which do appeal as they have specific useful info.

If anyone wants a link to downloads for all the Mazda Connect firmware versions, satnav maps, Gracenote etc, let me know.

The satnav stuff is awkward as it seems to be tied to SD card CIDs but there are how-to’s on getting it working which then gives 3 years more updates. Haven’t got that working yet, and haven’t yet braved the firmware upgrade as there’s a slight risk of bricking the unit if you don’t keep the power on.

If you get the satnav update working, I'd appreciate the info. Everything on Mazda3revolution for it seems to have got deleted I guess at the request of Mazda.

Does the inbuilt Satnav get traffic updates thou, or is that another subscription? I can't make head nor tail of it currently, and as I don't get the car until Saturday it's not something I can check, and I doubt I'll get much chance over the weekend anyway to try stuff with where it's already at, other than connect to Bluetooth!

I'm umming and arring about the firmware on mine as it's at v33, which means I can't tweak it unless I update it to a tweakable version. If the FW is still at that version, I suspect the maps are also 4 years old. Part of me just says wait for the CarPlay unit as I'm an iPhone user, rather than faffing around and spending £60 on a cheap Android phone to tether to my iPhone to use android auto. However I would much rather use Google Maps/Waze than the inbuilt system.

Either way I'm looking at £40-£60 to get an updated satnav SD card via ebay which probably won't work how I want it to, or attempt the firmware update to sideload Android Auto and then £60 on an Android phone. Or just wait and spunk £200-£250 (plus installation probably as I won't want to do it myself unless it looks really easy, and I'd probably rather someone else do it who knows what they are doing)

The only other inconvenience is the crap placement of the 12V socket being behind the handbrake if I want to just carry on using my iPhone and find somewhere to mount that! Running a cable to the dash to a phone holder looks messy and trying not to get it in the way of the hand brake and gear stick, and I do have a dash cam also. I don't really fancy fucking about with the fuse box, so I'm going to have to think of a way to get that cable around also without it being a mess. I think I should be able to get through the upholstery above the window and down the casing down the sides like I did with the Mondeo, but once I get down to the bottom of the passenger side door it gets more complicated, go round the glove box and back down the side of the passenger side middle, or continue to go round the outside and under the back passenger side foot mat. Once I have the car I'll have a better idea I guess.

Traffic updates are indeed subscription-only. Also they rely on the WiFi working in the car, which doesn't on mine - known issue with late 14 / early 15 models which requires a replacement properly shielded CMU. Can be done under warranty. The warranty which expired in March before I got the car.

Mine's also 33 at the moment, I've run one of the scripts to ensure that USB auto-run doesn't get disabled in future updates, but that's it so far.

SatNav cards can be had for £36 on Ebay - search for "2018 mazda connect" - might be easier than faffing. Having spent the best part of a day mucking around with it yesterday I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

It'd be nice to have CarPlay, from what the guys on Mazda3Revolution have said, it's not too much of a hassle to do the hardware swap yourself, just some awkward cable routing. That would remove your need to put the phone somewhere visible.

On my only significant journey so far, I had the Mazda map display up and used the iPhone Google Maps instructions by Bluetooth.

New car owners who don't get stuff fixed under warranty.

I suspect I'll have the same problems as you.

Thou I think mine was used for business, so probably didn't care. Would have thought the firmware would have got updated as part of services thou! So doesn't give much faith in the main dealer doing their job properly either.

Mine was a "One Lady Owner" who probably didn't try connecting up to the WiFi.
They did use the satnav though, a bunch of favourite locations left configured. I wonder what the data protection regulations say about that - the dealer really should have wiped all the settings.

Did anyone else's used Mazda 3 come with a service book? I have all the service history in Mazda's nice paper booklet documents, but no actual book that I've been used to getting 'stamped' with previous manufacturers.

I've turned off the 'no touchscreen use while moving' setting but not bothered with any firmware updates and mods as of yet. Not sure I'll actually bother at the moment.

EDIT: Finally found a blog post on it, seems its all online and digital. I guess to encourage you to continue to go to the main dealer. Sigh. Will have to ensure independents are registered on the system and actually update!

Yup, all digital, which does restrict you to dealers for keeping that up to date.

You can also access it via the MyMazda app. Registering on that requires you to send a photo of your V5C, which I'm still waiting for, a month after buying the car.

Was yours done online there and then?

My used car salesman gave me print outs from the gov website with all the V5C change of ownership stuff for both the new and old car and that sorts my existing tax refund out, so no need to do any of the yellow slip send off stuff. I do also have the green slip for the new one. Will let you know when mine comes if out of curiosity yours was not done in the same manner!

Yeah, done online and have the green slip and print outs.
They're quick enough to take the tax, not so forthcoming on the docs!

Passed on my old Volvo at the weekend so went through a similar process for that. New owner is very pleased (well, it's a free car, despite the tax and insurance costs).

Got my V5C. So that took, 4 working days!
