random car maintenance/ buying etc questions (catch-all thread)

Thx.
Yeah looking at superb on auto trader and Passat. Assuming they are both well made these days?
Out for a cycle today and stopped to look in the lots in plough lane.
Ford didn’t have a single mundano.
Sat in a 5008. Nice cockpit , but too MPV for me. Also only a 1.2 engine - my penis is far too small to be sble to drive that

Superb is meant to be really good to drive and pretty reliable. Petrol I assume? Id go for that personally or the new Toyota Corolla/Camry if you want newer.

Def time to get rid. Facebook Marketplace is a fast option for better money though. Or PX it when you get something bit newer. Farewell dirty old diesel!

and maybe worth doing it before next phase of london ULEZ gets close to happening - fairly sure second hand prices of diesel cars has gone down since first phase happened

So
Because the car shape I favour (big estate for camping trips) only comes in diesel and I rarely drive, it is all gummed up with soot.
Local garage have done some magic to the computers and they now say - I kid you not:
I need to drive it above 60mph for at least 1 hour. (yes, speed not revs). Also, if I drop it below 60, I need to start again. This is in order for the bloody computer to decide to do some sort of magic regeneration process, to get the "crap in the system sensor" TM below 300%. Apparently I need to do this ASAP, not just when I next planned to drive somewhere.

I'm in SW2. Where is the best place this weekend where I can hope to achieve the above as efficiently as possible?

(FWIW its a 20011 e350d and the next car I get will be petrol)
For that run, the A3 should be ok

Skoda superb arriving today

The Merc went to we buy any car: they gave a price a few hundred better than PX, and the manager was vey helpful friendly and added a bit to the value his computer was giving (West Dulwich WeBuyAnyCar FWIW - we both agreed the company needs to start managing its reputation better).

I actually preferred to go WeBuyAnyCar, as I didn't want to look in the eye the poor sod that is going to buy that Merc. Word to the wise - don't buy a 61 plate silver E350 (7 seats):, the alloys are all kerbed to buggery, one is possibly cracked (slow puncture, despite having the tyre repaired twice), the DFP probably needs replacing, and the suspension is leaking air at the back - and that costs a lot to fix

audi -> VW => skoda all use the same structural stuff I think

Haven't had a play yet, but have discovered the bloody thing has KESSY - which means I have had to drop £7 on a pouch to keep the keys in (paranoid moi?).

but still - umbrella in the door. Just like a Royce

I'm starting to contemplate the next car

was told at MOT last autumn that there would probably be a couple of hundred quid's worth of stuff needed for this year's MOT

and front end (it's front wheel drive) is starting to get a bit noisy (rumbling sort of noise) which is not a good sign

blargh

You missed Seat

Audi ➡️ VW ➡️ Seat ➡️ Skoda effectively just trim levels on steroids from what I can tell

How do I find the exact part I need?

The pipe feeding the front windscreen washer is split, and I thought I could Google the part number and order it, then fit it myself?

Apparently not, because all my searching just leads to generic parts that don't seem right. I've tried self bonding tape in the meantime but that didn't really work.

How would Urban's car folk approach the problem? Glad of any help.

I got some from Halfords. It's pretty universal size, you cut it to length. I'd avoid a dealer like the plague for this type of thing.

Of course try Halfords, who may even fit it or there are lots of forums for owners of a particular make and full of very knowledgeable people who know all there is to know about a given car.

I bought a kit off eBay when mine split. It didn’t work very well and I had to bodge it with gaffer tape. It was fine for a while but just got it fixed properly by the garage that did my mot and service today.

This is the car I sold - 11490 to you sir/madam
autotrader
I sold for £6200 last month, so that is an 86% markup. - before fettling expenses. No idea if that is a standard markup, or they saw me coming.

It looks like they replaced the alloys (they used to be boy racer black), and may have patched up a rip on the drivers seat. Don't know if they have fixed the innards, so it may still have a DPF / limp mode issue, and the suspension will need sorting

I have just read a quote about someone who bought a CX5 and said the sales staff took 2 hours showing him around the car. I know the guy had exceptional circumstances.
I don't know that I have had anyone go over a car with me at all, including when I bough the CX3. My only question was how do I turn of the front parking sensors which
they couldn't answer! I remember vividly test driving my current Alfa. "When we get on to the dual carriage way, when the road is clear, pootle along in 2nd gear, then floor it :D
What have other peoples experiences been like when buying a car?

So when I bought the Merc before the one above

I thought I would prove to the dealer that I wasn't a tyre kicker, and knew of what I was talking
I asked him to show me the dip stick so I could check the colour of the oil.
He informed me they don't have a dip stick. Suspect that this conversation was factored into subsequent negotiations

That reminds me, before I bought the Brera I test drove a c class coupe. It had a spoiler across the back window and I said how useless it was as it really would not improve the handling and simply blocked rear vision. Without a hint of irony the salesman said it was for stopping the rear screen icing up.

My Skoda has an ice scraper inside the fuel filler cap.
And an umbrella in the door - so it is in many respects identical to a Royce
Perhaps the C class one was just a bigger/better version ice scraper? .
You should have ripped it off to test its scraping capabilities
