Car owners in routine outbreak of extreme selfishness

Proposal to ban private cars from public roads

Technological developments have only made the idea more feasible since I wrote that ten years ago.
So not really nationalising private car ownership then, just car clubs like the ones that already exist but have fuck all market share on account of not really meeting the affordability and convenience criteria for anybody who doesn't live in a heavily populated city with good public transport who only requires the use of a car very occasionally? Just want to check I have this right

No, you do not have that right.

Me too, tho my garage houses my sons weight bench equipment, a fridge, freezer, 3 bikes and other stuff.

Think I’ve parked the car in it only a handful of times.

My car wouldn't fit in my garage, it is too small even if I did chuck out the 6 bikes, kayak, luggage etc. but don't tell anyone, it will ruin the illusion that I live in a mansion ;)

In teuchterworld, nobody would actually be allowed to live anywhere that wasn’t a densely populated city. So that would take care of that.
The proposal is specifically designed to make change possible in areas outside of densely populated cities. Car sharing schemes already work well in densely populated areas on a commercial basis. This is the whole point of introducing a scheme that doesn't rely mainly on commercial incentives. This is what nationalisation is all about. It's all explained in that thread for anyone who actually wants to read it properly and make a genuine attempt to understand the principle of the proposal. Unfortunately though, it proposes something that goes a little too far in extending socialistic principles even for people who post on urban75 to be comfortable with. They want the railways nationalised because they think that'll end up with a better service for them personally (and they may be right). But they don't want their cars nationalised because it would mean sacrificing a tiny bit of their personal freedom and convenience in the service of the greater good. They'll complain about poor public transport provision in rural areas but reject suggestions as to how to improve that situation if it means they have to change the way they personally make transport decisions.

I suspect your argument would have rather more support if you were able to make the case that the bolded bit above were accurate. Thus far you have failed to do so, presumably because you know it’s a load of old bollocks.

His proposal is that the already overcrowded Dorking train station car park somehow crams even more cars in there to be available for people to use to reach the 99% of the local area public transport is currently unavailable for. So they can carry on driving exactly as now but with less accessibility

I'm assuming I'd not be losing money by betting that 'changing the way they make transport decisions...' actually means being herded off to live in some crowded, dirty shithole surrounded by joyless cunts like teuchter...

No, honestly, I'll pass....
You've not read a word of it, obviously.

Nope, the worst case scenario is that there would be exactly the same number of cars in there as now. What's your solution to the overcrowding?

And that’s the more reasonable aspect of his plan. He fails to explain whether, after delivering the family with multiple car seats and luggage to their rural idyll, the cars miraculously return to the station so they can be used by someone else, or they are just left to litter the countryside until a passing user chances upon them.
