Car owners in routine outbreak of extreme selfishness

Or perhaps the cars drivers should stop expecting to be able leave their private property lying around wherever they want in a public space.

Yes I've never really understood this. I don't keep my bathtub or my fridge in the middle of the fucking road, yet for some reason the public is obliged to provide free poison-spewing, kiddie-maiming death machine storage?

Not that my shittip has this feature but don't they only cut the engine when handbrake is on? Can't remember the last time I used handbrake unless actually parking, probably on my test

Mine has a handbrake that’s comes on by itself whenever you stop, even leaving it in drive. It disengages when you push the accelerator pedal. The engine cutoff system only works if you keep your foot on the brake.

Mine cuts out when the car is stationary and the footbrake is applied but won't restart if the brake is released, it doesn't matter if the handbrake or the autobrake (it has one of those as well) are applied. Restarts when the clutch is pressed.
It doesn't alway do it even when enabled, if the aircon is on it won't do it either but it will do it if the lights are on.
This is the first car I've had that does it and basically I don't like it, I bought my first second hand car in 1978 and those were the days when if the car stopped at lights you weren't sure it would restart. I know intellectually it is OK to let the car do it but my subconcious isn't as easy to convince.
The feature(?) is on by default every time I start the car but as soon as I do, I press the disable button.

Yours is an auto isn't it? Mine's a manual so it's slightly different, is your auto-handbrake permanently on then? Mine has to be enabled by pressing the button which I do, I like that feature.

All this automation, ruins the fun imo, that little thrill when you get in car in morning and realise it's touching the house cos you forgot to put the handbrake on

It is an auto. And we do have to press a button to turn on the auto-brake, once pressed it is on for the whole journey, it’s definitely my favourite recent thing that I’ve had. Frau Bahn can’t get on with it.

Had a number of cars that rolled in to the house even though I didn’t forget to put the handbrake on :(

But 330 horses paired with a brace of turbo chargers ensures there’s still fun to be had...

On the new works VW, an auto, we have an electronic brake and auto hold which holds when you stop. Then the stop start kicks in. It restarts when you touch a pedal, touch the steering wheel or the car in front pulls away. All very handy if you are busy on the phone.
when the auto brake is on, the brake lights stay on, blinding the driver behind

Yes, car drivers should be charged a great deal more for parking, etc. The land used for parking could be used for much better purposes.

The way to avoid on-street parking is to provide proper off-street parking facilities and the correct incentive to use them (eg don’t charge unreasonable prices). If residents have no drives, because the planning authorities didn’t insist on them and nobody has provided a car park, residents are going to have to park on the road. I doubt they like it, but there it is.

All modern autos have some sort of hill hold because there’s no clutch pedal. I didn’t know that when I got my first automatic which was a Mercedes and Mercs don’t have handbrakes either, so I was trying to figure out how to do hill starts. The parking brake on Mercedes’ is foot operated by a pedal just to the left of where the clutch pedal would be. You press it down to engage it and release it with a hand pull next to the steering wheel. It seemed to me that I’d need at least one extra hand for a hill start until I realised it had auto-hold.

They don't have to park on the road at all. They have free will.

People who park their cars blocking pavements presumably tell themselves they have no choice but to do so. Wrong. 'No choice' is what a person in a wheelchair has about taking their chances in the middle of the road when some festering anus has blocked the pavement.

When you cycle in to town, do you take your bike home before locking it up, or leave it chained up on the pavement?

Parking on the road is different to parking on the pavement though.

Car drivers are selfish by default. The idea that you get enough square metres outside your house to park your lazy ass doesnt even take into consideration the costs of property. My bedroom is smaller than a car. I pay £400 a month for that. Car tax needs to be up at the same levels IMO.

Owning a car is not a human right.

If you live somewhere with rent that high I assume there is decent public transport.

It's not a human right, but we live in the society that has been built and for many that means cars are needed if you want to be able to work.

Yeah, we might want to examine that.

Not to mention the magic fairy dust that cars run on and the costs of conflict across the world. But yes, we need to get to work.

Boris Sprinkler lives in a flat city with massive cycle infrastructure. I'm sure he'd still be of the same opinion if he lived where you do... :hmm:
