Car owners in routine outbreak of extreme selfishness

There’s a fair bit: upgraded public transport and, presumably, a massive programme of new infrastructure, and publicly owned cars for private hire. Plenty to go on and dismiss out of hand.

That's really not very much if you start thinking.
I'm also not sure you understand what "dismiss out of hand" means.

Anything that involves carrying two car seats plus whatever else I need down a hill (that is unsuitable for buses) with two young kids to get at least one bus to go to a giant car park to borrow a car to drive somewhere, then somewhere else, then park it in another giant car park and get on at least one other bus to somewhere else in all types of weather before I’ve actually arrived at work is not terribly appealing.

That does sound rather shit. I'm not sure who is suggesting precisely that.

NOTE: (considering we're now on page 7)

For anyone joining the thread: the 'car owners' referenced in the OP was not originally a reference to those posting on this thread.

Go on...

An inevitable consequence of my car being taken into public ownership so that it can be used by other people will be that it will need to be stored in places that are accessible to those other people. Those storage places may not be at or close to my home or places of work.

Without getting all cross-thread beefy about it, if you read any of his responses on the various brexit threads you see the same pattern - utterly unable to accept that any experience outside of his own could have as much validity as his own, or indeed that such a thing could exist.

And we voted the same way....

I'll leave you all to argue with yourselves about your imaginary versions of what I'm proposing, your imaginary versions of what it's intended to solve, and your delusionary beliefs that outside of big cities everything's just fine how it is, that rural car ownership doesn't cause serious problems with congestion and pollution, and your wilful ignorance of all those who don't or can't own a private car, especially those in rural areas. I'm off to the (real) countryside for the weekend.

Do you need a lift?

Why not just stick with the car, then, which would remain entirely possible?

If transport options changed, or you changed jobs, in the future, you could re-assess whether the car was still the best option, but the capital investment you'd already made in your vehicle would not be part of the calculation.

What is your view on commercial delivery vans?

What is your view on commercial delivery vans?
Vehicles that deliver the goods you buy at your local shops or online purchases to your doorstep do not pollute, cause congestion or cause injuries to pedestrians in accidents.

Ditto those highly convenient but in many cases completely unnecessary cabs that take you home after clubbing or to the airport at an unholy hour and save you a dreadful long journey by night bus. Or car club vehicles.

It’s only privately owned cars that pollute, congest and kill children. Pay attention ffs.

If there was just one kind of car you know it is scientifically proven that the amount of arseholery on the roads would be dramatically reduced.

I would love to have the convenience of not having a car, but it would make getting to and from work nigh on impossible in any affordable way. Buses where I live finish about 7PM, trains at 11 ish, so my only option getting home from work at 2am would be taxi, which would be about 30 quid.
