Loughborough Junction chitter-chatter

Hi everyone. I've been contacted (via Lambeth Mutual Aid) by a guy living in makeshift accommodation in LJ who is in need of some clothes. Jeans 34 waist long leg, shirts large and trainers/shoes size 10.5. if anyone is able to spare something I could collect. Many thanks

Does anyone remember Big Ray?

He was a neighbour of mine when I lived in Cambria Road in the 90s. He was a country music DJ who dressed the part. I remember him passing away some time ago, but can't find anything online about him.

in nearly 24 years here I can remember only once seeing someone going in.
Maybe all the excitement is downstairs, like the taxi company (whos name I forget) was on the other side of Harbour Road and CHL just before you get to Loughborough Junction station.

That was an experience.

23 or so years ago go now mind.

On a lighter note, has anyone ever been in Control Tower? I've passed it every day for about six months now and never seen one person in there.
It happened years ago, but this is all I know the place for

On 3 June 1997, Anthony Baker was shot in the head during a raid at the Control Tower takeaway in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, where he worked. The shooting happened just a few hundred yards from Lambeth Town Hall where, at the same time, Chief Inspector Alan O'Gorman was telling a packed meeting that gun crime in the area was becoming out of control

Home James.

PB: In light of that was there really a taxi firm called Home James?

RH: Yes, in Coldharbour Lane in Brixton. It wasn’t only a taxi firm. It was also a Jamaican blues club, and I used to go down there about ten, fifteen years ago, and have a late night drink and maybe smoke a few strange substances while I was there, and then get a mini cab home. It was the perfect evening.

A lot of the songs on ‘Me and Home James’ are lamenting a side of London that is passing on. These were places of great character that I quite liked and which are now gone. That beautiful record shop I used to go is now a Starbucks, and that pub that would have a lock in until five ‘o’ clock in the morning is now a block of flats, and that Jamaican cab office I used to go to for late night blues parties has just vanished off the face of the Earth. Everything has become a lot more sanitised.

It is true that the cook in the control tower was shot fatally in the head. He seemed to be an innocent party from what I remember.
The article is rather weird for Wikipedia - how about this bit?

2018 graffiti artists hit by train[edit]

On 18 June 2018, three graffiti artists, aged between 19 and 23, died when they were hit by a train at Loughborough Junction station on Coldharbour Lane. A former Transport for London (TfL) board member, Brian Cooke, was criticised by social media users after he tweeted that the dead men were "common scum who cost the railway millions and keep fares high".[9]

Does on the railway viaduct between Barrington Road and Loughborough Road count as Loughborough Junction Station - or Coldharbour Lane?
And what happened to Brian Cooke then? Did he get sacked - or has he joined GB News?

I can't find out what happened to Brian Cooke - except this was the 2nd time he had caused problems with his comments.
Socialist Worker however had this charming tribute article: No more deaths on the tracks—why graffiti must be decriminalised - Socialist Worker

I saw Ray around for many years, he dj'ed in my local the Wickwood Tavern for a while. He is featured in Herne Hill Personalities published by the Herne Hill Society in 2006.

There seems to be constant and completely blatant shoplifting going on in the LJ Co-op just now. Whenever there's no security on the door. Several times I've been in there the last couple of weeks. In with a bag, shovel stuff off the shelves, ignore the staff's requests to stop, and out again no big hurry.

I thought the ticket office closure consultation was weird.
Like there's 2 YouTube videos telling you they are consulting - with sign language - then they refer you to an online page with FAQs which state clearly that only letter or emails sent to the consultation agency will be considered.
No questionnaire or anything to make it easy.
Don't call us we'll call you as we used to say in British Rail.

I see the bottled beers deal has gone up again at the Coop.

It was 4.20 then recently 4.80 now its up to five pound for two beers.

Not surprised shoplifting is on the rise.

There was a comment before about shoplifting at the Co-op.
I wonder if Peter Hitchens (or his researchers) read our discussions?

His argument that in good old days it didn't happen I don't agree with. Did this post on history of shoplifting in 18c on the shoplifting thread.

local security at my friends major supermarket (not brixton locality) tells her to fill her bag up, no barring if it's food and essentials. expensive alcoholand bits he won't ignore though...

TFL have finally woken up two days late:
