I'm not THAT interested

Rightly so...he drew us in and hasn't delivered..he's done that thing that makes most of us all not keep a diary/blog...he started out with a hook, descriptive and anchored in who he is (memories) he then just glossed over the present...drew some pics, made money, thank you friendly Portuguese people, have food will cook.

My friend Martin, who we buried two years ago aged 42, had Downs. His brother Seamus also had learning disabilities.

They used to break pallets and other scrap wood to make 'sticks' (kindling for firelighting) for beer money. I had another mate who was a foreman in a Pine furniture factory in Dundalk. They had skips full of scrap timber that they used to pay somebody to take away.

I put the two in touch and very soon Martin and Seamus were flat out on the beer, giving it large in local hostelries as they insisted on buying drink for every person who had previously showed them kindness - and there were many.

Once they got this out of their system they became regular stick tycoons. Well Martin did. He paid Seamus a wage and kept the bulk of the profit for himself, as he reckoned he was the brains of the operation and giving Seamus too much money only encouraged him to overindulge the booze.

I used to love watching the two of them squabbling away like Waldorf and Stadtler off The Muppets whilst they worked. They both had a mischievous sense of humour, sometimes downright dark, and both loved to point out the others shortcomings and 'stupidity'.

Martin was loved by all and his funeral really brought home just how busy he was and how many different groups of people he engaged with and did voluntary work with. People from his local GAA Club, all the local Trad musicians (he loved his Sessions and Fleadhs), the local Lourdes Committe, the OAP Luncheon Club, all the shopkeepers who bought his sticks, people from the Rainbow Club, The youth club etc etc. He lived a rich and fulfilling life that would put many, supposedly more 'able' people, to shame.

But he could also be a contrary little fucker on occasion. When he was annoyed he could be wicked, especially to Seamus. Fortunately for him, he came from a family and a community that would, whilst still making allowances, not stand for too much nonsense. Sometimes he had to be told forcefully to behave himself and on occasion he had to be threatened, to have his card marked, to quieten him. He would storm off to sulk, then come back smiling again.

He would have laughed his cock off at the thought that people with Downs are incapable of being ignorant, provocative and aggressive and somehow deserve a bye-ball and total indulgence when behaving badly.

I, like everybody else on here, wasn't in that Supermarket when Stanley Edwards deliberately bumped into that woman with his backpack. His reaction may well have been over the top. It certainly seems a bit childish. But to characterise his actions as 'assaulting' some delicate, defenceless flower - complete with allegations that he punched her - seems equally childish.

I know if Martin was watching the incident, he would have sniggered and said 'Job for her'. Like I said, his humour could be dark.

Stanley's interaction certainly seems a bit inappropriate, but no more inapproriate than the patronisation of those who believe all people with LD are just 'lovely' and that their occasional aggressive behaviour should be indulged.

And certainly no more inappropriate than the behaviour of those who, because they choose not to like Stanley, reularly choose to misrepresent what he said he did.

If you don't like his thread, keep the fuck off it. There are plenty of others, full of 'nice-ish' posters.
At what point did I say he punched a defenceless flower? He recognised that the person was downs and carried on regardless. I have worked in supported housing and respite with learning difficulties some of which were downs. I've been hugged to death and also been the target of flying coffee tables, shoes, and a very near miss with a CD Player. I treated them as equals. So please don't try to patronise me with your experience of knowing someome with a disability. Downs have varying degrees of learning difficulties. Take away the disability for a moment and imagine someone else barging past Stanley. On any given day it could be someone who is stressed and their mind is elsewhere. It could be someone with mental health issues, or it could just be an ignorant twat with no manners. Whatever the case I personally would not react in that way he did. I don't hate Stanley, I don't know him. If asked would I like to meet him on the basis of that thread, then it would be a fucking no. Curious also to why you singled me out with your romanticised tales when many more on here have said Stan should starve etc?

Also, thanks for the 'fuck off the thread'. If it's okay by you I will stay Ta. If I'm offending you so much, you fuck off and follow his blog.

+1

I have to say that I liked his drawings ....and I liked the idea of his nomadic, artistic lifestyle and I found his food foraging somewhat entertaining... . But on reading (for the first time) the quote about the woman in the supermarket I found it hard to reconcile the portrayal of a friendly, nomadic, free spirited artist with the actions he described himself doing ...ie...knocking over her shopping onto the floor in "retaliation" for a bump... and clearly getting some satisfaction from it.

Did he stop to think for a minute that the woman might not have heard him or might not have meant to bump into him..? In his own words he proceeded regardless, despite recognising that the woman had DS. He even reasoned that he should do it anyway despite her DS...to teach her a lesson. What lesson did he teach her? What did she learn? Humiliation....?
He assumed she had heard him and had deliberately barged past him despite his mumbling to her to give him a minute..
He didnt stop to think "maybe she didnt hear me".... which is what most people might think...
There is significantly more hearing loss amongst DS people. They can suffer a lot from ear and hearing problems.

Hearing disorders in children with Down syndrome
They also can find social situations, such as shopping, highly stressful. It can be excruciatingly difficult for them to do things such as shopping on their own because they have a multitude of difficulties ranging from anxiety issues to something as simple as handling money.

As Calamity1971 says, they can have mood issues but they can also be the most sensitive and affectionate people you will ever meet. They also can have problems with motor control and coordination.

You fucking make allowances for people with learning disabilities when they are trying to survive in a world that isnt as disability oriented as it should be.... a world that is already stacked against them....a world that judges everyone on ability.

I wasnt going to say anymore on this ...... as it was stressful even thinking about SE's behaviour. towards the woman. The thought crossed my mind that if he could do it to a woman with DS that he could do it to anyone....an elderly person...a child...anyone.

So in my book, he is not the happy wanderer, innocently foraging for food and sketching for the love of " art" and "freedom". He is an ignorant man who decided that the woman with DS needed to learn a lesson. Maybe Stanley needs to learn a lesson himself? In his case, he doesnt have an intellectual or physical disability so he should be well able to take it on the chin and learn from it..
