Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has been given a £300,000 armoured Jaguar to protect him from anarchist protesters.
After the election the Lib Dem leader was seen going to work by Tube and being driven around in a standard *family saloon.
But as protests have erupted over the coalition Government’s policies, *especially much-hated plans to increase student tuition fees, officials have *decided to *increase his *security.
Clegg now travels everywhere in a bullet- and bomb-proof Jaguar XJ with two police officers – a driver and a guard – plus two back-up officers.
The taxpayer-funded car has the highest level of armour available, known as B7, which is used to protect major terror targets such as *Israeli Prime Minister *Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Jaguar has a direct intercom link to Scotland Yard’s control room and can resist attacks with AK-47 *assault rifles, CS gas and even hand grenades.
Mr Clegg’s *security *arrangements, which also include elite police at his home 24 hours a day, are estimated to cost at least half a million pounds a year and make him the most *protected British Deputy PM in history.
A major *security review was *ordered after *police were caught off guard by the intensity of anger and violence during *student fee protests.
A police source said: “It is *unprecedented for a Deputy PM to have this level of *protection. The level of *personal hatred *directed at Clegg has not been seen since the days of *Margaret Thatcher and the Poll Tax riots.
“It’s not just him, either. All the senior Lib Dems in the Cabinet have had their security reviewed and *increased because of the level of public loathing.”
It is believed that Business Secretary Vince Cable, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander and Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey have also been warned they are likely to be *targeted by protesters.
They have high profiles among Lib Dem ministers for their roles in forcing through swingeing budget cuts.
Several Liberal Democrat ministers have had dog dirt posted through their letterboxes and even death threats. They have now had security briefings, their post is checked and some have had panic alarms installed *at home.
Security expert Dai Davies, former head of the police unit protecting the Royal Family, said: “This is the first time a Deputy Prime Minister has needed this level of *protection. Considering the threats, probably by *anarchists looking to make *trouble, it is *something to be taken extremely *seriously.”
When he *became Prime Minister *David Cameron got rid of *police *outriders for his *official car to cut costs, but his *security has been stepped up again.
