lefty party predictions

All of the lefty grouplets will proclaim their 0.02% share of the vote as a 'base' and will also highlight the massive level of support received on the doorstep/stall which mysteriously failed to translate to votes. What will be interesting will be to see how much work continues after the election in these areas or whether the 'class struggle' moves on to something else deemed more sexy/interesting. TUSC in particular.

I don't know how typical my consituency of Tottenham is, but in 2010 TUSC got over 1000 votes here, over 2%, and the same candidate (who also lives, works and is an active trade unionist and campaigner in Tottenham) is standing again, so clearly she considers it "sexy/interesting" enough.

I'd be very surprised if she saves her deposit, but I'm certainly hoping she gets a bigger vote and a bigger share. Let's wait and see before coming out with this sneery shit, shall we...

Tottenham is very atypical and the trot candidates normally do better than most places

My central point was whether similar work continues after the election or whether the bandwagon rolls on to something else i.e. is this serious work for the long haul or just or a few weeks every 5 years. Not sure how that's sneering, it seems more of a question.

Do you think 2% of the vote in a working class area like Tottenham is significant?

Everyone in my household is voting for the local TUSC guy, me and my fella because of the lack of other lefty choices, and my sister because they had a hot fireman in their party election broadcast. Maybe this means TUSC have a broad appeal in Brent

]he's a decent bloke, but TUSC locally (ie Brent) has barely had a word to say about the coalition parties and spent the whole time slagging off Labour - Dawn will get in comfortably I think.

It didn't come across as a genuine question, it came across as a very strong suggestion that it isn't serious, that's it's just some sort of election bandwagon, that the people involved will immediately move on to something more "sexy" etc.

I don't know about other candidates in other constituencies (and I do realise that Tottenham probably isn't typical) but I definitely don't get that impression about the candidate here, which is why I was happy to vote for her earlier.

This is an ultra safe Labour seat, and I don't know how you judge the significance of a vote of 2.6% (just looked it up) for TUSC here. It's more than the Greens got in 2010, and more than twice what UKIP got - I'll be interested to see how the votes of those three compare this time.

I thought you meant the fireman for a second. My sister would have been .

I wouldn't be surprised if TUSC considered it their job to just slag off labour given that they don't expect to get in, and I don't have a problem with that.

He didn't even get close last time.
3.7%, not too far off. And I can see him doing a little better his time.

TUSC could do okay in Tower Hamlets, on the back of the Defend Rahman campaign, but everywhere else....it'll be interesting to see if they can beat the Red Front (RCP) average of 300 odd back in '92. Any less is just ludicrously embarrassing. None of the other lefty parties in England will even manage that, except maybe a CPer or two.

galloway will get the highest vote, but only 20-25%, so wont win.

"Great progress made... finished 4th ahead of the Lib-Dems in some obscure ward (31 voters versus 29 for the Lib-Dems).. squeezed by voters returning to Labour... terrified of Tory government... natural disappointment to come from Labour government... people will turn to us... " then follow the same pattern as 1997 onwards. Except for Class War, who will just head down the pub.

I remember when Socialist Worker claimed Respect were the fourth force in British politics after Galloway's victory in 2005 (they got 0.3% of the total votes at that election).

oh, and Kingsley Adams could do okay in Bermondsey & Southwark - tho I suspect he'll be squeezed by people voting to get rid of Simon Hughes. Not to mention the revolutionary appeal of Republican Socialist Steve Freeman

3.7% - will do better this time but not much.

None of them are going to get fucking anywhere. A total utter waste of time.

TUSC might do a bit better if they didn't have - a shit name, a shit logo, such little publicity, feck all internet campaign, the same shit old-labour blustering types blustering, a shit website (jesus fuck, was it made on Word?) and more than anything the same tired crap old fighting talk "stop the cuts" "make the bosses pay" council blah blah blah bullshit.

http://podemos.info/

Try going on that. People are disappointed and complaining they might only get 15-20% of the vote. Almost a million likes on facebook. On mainstream telly tonight, despite being attacked and targeted by the media extensively. Just totally unthinkable in the UK. The "British left" should save the deposits and do fuck all until it can do something remotely similar.

If it means behaving like that wanker Iglesias I'll stick to losing deposits thanks. Take the comments on the website, think the logo's alright, the name's crap but all the good ones are taken. Feels a bit like you think the lack of publicity is our fault - do you?

He will probably keep his deposit for the cov council seat (st michaels) he is running for but i doubt he will keep it for the parliament seat (coventry north west). (hope i'm wrong of course)

There are no deposits for local elections.

I wish they'd put Dave Pitt in the broadcast a bit more

To be honest I think we'll perversely do far better in council elections than general - specifically because of the broadcast/limited media coverage/Royal Mail delivered fancy leaflets and because of the energy put into local elections over the last few years. Just got back from a marathon campaign stall - a lot of people telling us they voted us in the local, Labour in the general to get the Tories out. Didn't have the heart to remind them there aren't any Tories to get out in Sheffield.

For some reason when we're campaigning people tend to believe we're only standing in the council elections. Somebody told me the other day we couldn't be standing for Parliament "because people who stand for Parliament don't want a £10 an hour minimum wage".

PS Can't believe bookies are saying Galloway will keep his seat, I'd vote for nearly anyone to send that wanker packing if he was my MP.

I reckon Steve Freeman could get 10,000 votes with his charisma and an inspiring programme like that

*shrugs*

I'd be amazed if the lefties manage anything of note.

I'll be interested to see what numbers Class War pull. Nothing much in the way of precedent there.

...and to see if TUSC have anywhere where a saved deposit is even on the agenda.

But it will be really low key and irrelevant - even by our standards!

I'm not convinced that that is particularly knowledgeable odds. There haven't been any polls carried out their, as far as I can see, so unless Labour canvassers have leaked some awful returns, it's just guesswork, plus who's actually put a bet on

Does Bez count as left wing? He's going for that angle either way.

I think he'll get 2000 votes and beat TUSC.

TUSC in Salford did surprisingly well in the 2014 local elections, I'd be interested to see if they can keep it up.

I reckon the Mancs are gonna trounce us in Sheffield TUSC-wise, and mock us about it for ever. :/

being a brit left no-chancer candidate in a system you know is flawed and such, you've got to have a giggle about it.

Thats why ian bones interview made me laugh so much. Just his complete air of piss taking.

No the birthplace of capitalism will never submit to the result of a plebscite. Walk softly but carry a big stick etc

IWCA running in your area? not mine. I'd vote for them* if they did, but they don't. Shame that. This is proper dissafected working class territory as well.

I've made mock of the iwca before and I'll take this opportunity to rescind some of the harsher mockery. But this is territory where the left of labour alternative is a fucking green. Oh what fun democracy is.

*would have to check the candidate was a good person obvs
