League One Thread 2024/25

i managed completely to overlook that charlton had their big match with bromley in the BDSM trophy on tuesday - charlton won 1-0 to top the group.

wow.

in other news, sounds like reading's owners is in all sorts of financial shit.

Thanks - I hadn't seen that.

It's a mess.

There's a guy called Roger Smee in the background, but his consortium are only able to buy the club out of admin if it gets that far. He's a millionaire property developer, who I saw playing for us an the 70s.

He's been in the frame to buy the club before though. Actually, he may have previously been chairman.

That's annoying, the aim in the BDSM is to get eliminated as early as possible.

Is that his plan to take reading into administration?

No.

My understanding is that his consortium can't afford to buy the club from the current owner.
IF the club goes into admin, he will step in to buy it out of administration.

The current owner won't want that.

sounds like the under 23's game in the london senior cup was a bit more eventful

Wingate & Finchley FC First 2 - 9 Charlton Athletic FC U23

Thought we could have ended up winning v Exeter tonight even though can't be disappointed with a point after being 2-0 down early doors.

charlton v reading, wartime league south, august 1944

the 'fourth official' is from the civil defence / ARP, keeping watch for 'doodlebug' V1 flying bombs. note the earlier minor bomb damage to the 'covered end'

thread on 'charlton life' here.

biltzwalker on blooski has identified the warden and has more here.

the wartime league was not entirely formal, and loan players / transfers depended on where players were based or on leave at any time from the services.

i can feel an  coming on.

i couldn't face having the commentary on or watching the scoreline, so 3-0 up at half time was a bit of a surprise.

do i put the commentary on and listen as we let 4 in during the second half, or go and do the hoovering or something?

Orient’s season (so far) is panning out very much like the last one. Start badly, than a mid-season rally. Won 5, drawn 1 of our last 6 league games, and still in the FA Cup.

O’s fans are eyeing the playoffs rather than the relegation spots again…Mind you, we have been playing mostly the Div 3 dregs of late. Let’s see if we continue the copycat form of 23/24 with nosediving form towards the run-in, or continue to press on and trouble the top teams. I expect we’ll do neither and end up chugging along in mid-table.

Thread bragging rights up for grabs today.

Reading and Charlton both on 3 game winning streaks. Something's got to give.

2-1 Charlton, simply because I am so bad at predicting football results.

sounds quite a lively match for a 0-0. (i had the charlton commentary on)

and sounds like reading have got a pretty solid defence. (charlton had 17 shots, 6 on target according to BBC)

a couple of months ago, charlton would have lost that during injury time...

I’m happy with a point from that.

Not sure why we had agreements in the loan deals of Caleb Taylor and Aaron Morley so they could be sent back in January but that's how it is. Now Championship teams sniffing around Joe Low and King Kone, added to the loss last night (we were poor again) - could see this promotion bid falling apart :(

That seems quite pessimistic given where we are but it's only due to the high standards Bloomfield has set.
