From that Adam Smith piece: " It seems to me that tobacco is at the coalface of a much bigger cultural battle, in which capitalism, individualism and rationality are all coming under relentless attack by the enemies of freedom."

Yah, cuz capitalism is all about individualism isn't it? Look at me in my individualistic mass-produced mass-marketed rebel sneakers!

Ah, so sensible health advice is now propaganda? Sure.

It's not just advice, they have a full marketing budget and even sponsored the Simpson with tax payers money. Locally they are running a campaign against going to the pub and eating unhealthy food, which pisses me off as i'm trying to run a save our pubs campaign.

Are they now? Any proof of that? Even so, you do feel that telling people that eating less/better, moving more and so on is propaganda? Nothing to do with common sense then?

Is that true moon? Evidence please.

Quite, wealth tends to allow you to buy your way out of a state's influence. Most state's like Mafia are corrupt and happy to turn a blind eye to the economically powerful in return for favours.
Yes,we call that"capitalism"-which you support

The UK alcoholic drinks industry spends in the region of £800 million a year promoting it's wares. back in July 2010 Andrew Lansley, the coalition Health Secretary, cut the Change4Life marketing budget of £75 million...completely.

If your efforts at persuading others on here are any kind of benchmark, changes4life could save themselves a lot of money by simply funding you instead.

freedom isn't always fair, there will be times when one side has an unequal relationship over another. However although wealth and freedom are separate entities and shouldn't be conflated, having the later does increase the likelihood of obtaining the former.

So the person with property has much more freedom than the person without. Funny sort of freedom, the freedom to starve, wouldn't you say?

In other words you are more likely to find a fair trade and exchange for your work in a society that is free. Trying to work in a society that isn't free makes your chances of escaping poverty even more slim. Which is why your average poor worker in the US has better prospects then your average poor worker in North Korea.

More meaningless waffle. Appealing to an abstract "freedom" divorced from concrete circumstances is lame. You're also doing exactly what you accuse others of - trying to separate the social from the economic.

Liberals.

Sorry, caught up in the derail, guess you were talking about the actual thread topic ;)

And I don't agree in the slightest - the measures taken against the idiot in question aren't to do with extending some kind of indulgent abstracted tolerance but deny him perfectly normal and reasonable liberties relating to the behaviour of a legal political group. He's not even allowed on the website ffs!

its an awkward one - should fascists be able to march into asian areas with the sole intention of causing trouble?

Has it ever occurred to you that it might be the NHS's remit to do things like that?

You might think that but thankfully we have enlightened liberals like Moon23 to inform us that it is, in fact, more of this creeping totalitarianism he's been warning us about. The other day my dad's doctor told him that he should cut down on sugary foods since he's just been diagnosed with diabetes. He's clearly just as bad as that Mengele fella.
