Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

There's something so odd about this whole thing. We have umbrella gas-mask man breaking windows and walking off, we have neat piles of bricks stacked for no apparent reason in areas being protested, we have staged photos 'child soldiers' outside a mall, and we have white rioters not local to the area burning down buildings in black neighbourhoods.

I've never been a conspiracy theorist until now, but fuck me this is something manufactured for sure. So who's behind it? Fascist militias? 'Rogue' police officers? Far-left agitators? The Trump administration itself? The deep state? Other states seeking to destabilise the US?

Please tell me I'm going mad thinking any of this.

You're going mad.

More seriously, there's no over-arching 'conspiracy' just different groups acting in their own interests. The umbrella window guy is far from convincing as a agent provocateur cop btw, I think people scream that totally incorrectly 99.9% of the time. There's piles of bricks and stuff like that all over cities normally, they're not stacked there for the next orchestrated insurrection. Humans are also just weird and do weird seemingly illogical shit, especially in stressful and unusual situations like riots and wars.

For sure far right and alt-right elements are going to mobilize to take advantage of this, the same as anarchists and others probably will. Doesn't make this some grand conspiracy. Mix in some rumours and mistakes in reporting and people being confused in what they see, and it's the normal chaos you get in these situations.

I agree. Insane boogaloo/big igloo "big luau" provocation and cops is my guess.

edit: on second thought, this was not a well thought out essay, and shit seems too real today to be frivolous.

Yep, plenty of sightings of Three Percenters, 'Big Igloo Bois,' etc. in Minneapolis Friday.

"Very out of place. They weren’t cops, they weren’t National Guard,” Schumann said. “It was all just really hostile.”

I think we're likely to see a lot more provacateur acts from Trumpy types who think unrest will help him get re-elected on a "restoring law and order platform" - and who will be taking advantage of the facy that right now it's totally normal to go around with your face covered.

Then there are the apparently less organised types, like these white looters in Minneapolis:

A really large number of journalists documenting the protests have been shot with rubber bullets and tear gas at very close range and arrested by police in this last couple of days.

It seems there is quite a lot pointing to far right militia types stirring stuff up here, pushing an accelerationist agenda.

A lot of stuff chronicled in this Twitter account pointing in that direction:

This is really bad.

Yeah the far/alt right accelerationist stuff has massively grown the last few years.

Who'd have thought Hawaiian shirts would be symbols of an anti-State far right civil war movement?!

And, he's happy to speak out against Chauvin & the other three cunts.

Hundreds gathered in Santa Cruz, California on Saturday to take a knee in memory of George Floyd — including Police Chief Andy Mills. Mills posted his own photos from the protest, with the comment, “Small portion of a very peaceful protest. Black Lives Do Matter.”

The chief had previously issued a message to local residents regarding the death of George Floyd — condemning ex-cop Derek Chauvin. “Chauvin’s actions and those around him are the antithesis of what we view as good policing. The other officers had a duty to step in and stop this violent assault, and they failed,” Mills said.

Santa Cruz Police posted the powerful image with a heartfelt caption on Instagram — which received praise from followers. “SCPD is fully supportive of peaceful protests in the City of Santa Cruz – and we always keep them safe,”: the department wrote.

Lots of things are going on but from what you're saying the only people who aren't preparing are the actual rioters. Doesn't that seem strange to you?

This is a really good article which chronicles the development of how sections of right wing online subcultures came to decide to join BLM protests.

It's a little more complicated than straightforward agent provaceteur infiltration, and maybe requires a more sober analysis.

One possibility that comes to my mind is that rural/small town whites have become so disenfranchised from the mainstream US economy and society that they've started to latch on to any movement perceived as against the establishment. Whereas before they may have perceived black political movements as a threat to their relatively privileged social position, they no longer have any social position to defend or stake in the system.

I mean I don't know the social background of these people, so I'm just speculating here, but it does seem to be a very strange phenomenon.

And there's loads of good stuff on here (and there's a book Insurgent Supremacists) that has some good analysis of this kind of stuff.

Some of that shit on Twitter is people just people making shit up and denying agency to people, "black folks would never do this, must be outside agitators", same stuff happens in every riot. One of those Twitter accounts is full of nonsense and borderline conspiracy theory.

Conscious that being shot in your own home is not something new to many.

Seemingly enforcing curfew, but - surprise surprise - failing to understand their own rules.
