Irish Politics Thread

Idris2002

canadian girlfriend
Inspired by a comment Pickman's model made on the Ireland 2016 elections thread. I was going to call this "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to a United Ireland", but I thought better of it. . . we don't want to jinx things, now do we?

One thing that is already jinxed is the housing situation. Even if I was offered a job at home, I might not be able to take it, the housing crisis is that bad!

The latest twist is that the FG minority government is trying to rebrand tenement living (really) as the hip and happening option for young professionals who want to reenact Friends, series one through 16 (or however many series there were).

It would be nice to think that this will lead to them being punished at the polls, but that's probably asking too much. . .

the problem is that it's not like ff are a really good alternative
or labour
or sinn fein

The Government has been accused of being “mind numbing in its lack of ambition” in dealing with the housing crisis.

Labour leader Brendan Howlin made the claim in the Dáil as he hit out at co-living proposals featuring shared kitchen and living areas, which he described as “ludicrous”. He said these homes were an “attempt to normalise cramped living conditions and erode public housing standards”.

Housing crisis: Dáil told of ‘mind-numbing’ lack of ambition

One of my aunts met Howlin in the 1990s, and described him as being "like a giddy teenager".

NOT SO GIDDY NOW.

Not just him but Ben Gilroy, Peter o Laughlin, and Gemma O Doherty all represent some shade of farangism or just plain fascism or alt right anti choice shite.

Poor Farangist Ben Gilroy off to spend more time with his family, till his family get sick of him...Hermann Kelly's Irish Freedom party scoring an impressive 0%...

#lampostsforfascists*

while according to the exit poll Fianna Fail registered 0% among 18-24yos across the Midlands north west region.

#pleasebetrue

*I don't think Gilroy is a fascist but he's consistently moved rightwards

Looks like the Green Party are wiping everyone else's eyes.

I was surprised to see the RTE/TG4 exit poll shows the Greens coming in first in Dublin for the Euro elections with 23% of first preference votes, considering a couple of polls earlier in the month had them on around 10% in Dublin.

A wave of support for the Greens has set the party on course to top the poll in Dublin, according to a RED C exit poll for RTÉ and TG4, write Mícheál Lehane and Paul Cunningham.

The party may also be in contention for seats in the South and Midlands North West constituencies, something that looked impossible just a few days ago.
Strong support for Greens in Euro elections - exit poll

It's the family I feel sorry for

In fairness Idris2002 i'm sympathetic but wouldn’t touch them. I’m more inclined to Independent Left – Environmentalism, socialism, freedom and equality. #liveablecity these days. I'm not sure what they mean by manual working class. That the Sinn Fein vote suffered would suggest that there is some evidence that the WC as a whole didn't turn out. A lot of the far left would have relied on Shinner transfers. it would suggest that housing/repeal/austerity don't quite have the galvanising power they once did. Nor is there a Labour party to punish.*

I imagine that the electoral boundary changes would have made it harder too 9 seat LEA down to 7 and so forth.

Some results here but also turnout which seems to be highest in more well to do areas like clontarf Dublin City Council - The Results

edited to tidy up.

"We have a different vision for local government in Dublin"

i.e. the Culchies can freeze in the dark. :p

Seriously though . . . they look alright, this "Independent Left" you dug up. A latter-day attempt at the Gregory model?

Isn't Independent Left just John Lyons? I cant see a new party emerging from it.

Yeah it is John Lyons and few others including Conor Kostick I like what they say but it’s too early to tell if it will go anywhere. I think they may be wary of the Gregory comparison though.

Anyways, have found the demo

Thursday 6th, 6pm Garden of Remembrance.

I'd post the link but it's gone and disappeared. From the People Before Profits crowd.

There has been some oddness in the Irish Times (more than usual) recently today there is an article about one of the Eoghan Murphy shared living homes that used to be an orphanage called The Orphanage opening up but more bizarrely there was an article a week ago looking at the life expectancy of Protestants in the state and asking why they live longer. There was a good blog post about the long living protestants by this guy The Oisin Dubh On Protestant Life Expectancy and Lazy Journalism. which is sensible look at the issue rather than the IT level of batty-ness.

Is it me or is the Irish Times getting to the point where we can have a tread about its decline/going down the tubes?

So, the electoral conundrums produced by the long-term decline of the big two civil war parties continues. On these numbers a FF/SF/Greens/Labour coalition would be theoretically possible, but putting it together would present certain practical problems. . .

flypanam - I think that point was reached and breached quite some time ago. . .

Varadkar is especially loathsome in that clip where he attempts some private bithness school student level zingers. The consequences of the crash reinforced this sort of mentality. Not just among FGers either. His poor da.

Varadkar's da Ashok said:
“Everyone adored him. He was adorable, a gorgeous baby and then he went into Fine Gael. And that’s it.”

Was that a surprise?

“Yes.”

His father hoped his son would follow him into medicine – and he did, for a little while. “And then he became a member of Fine Gael.” Ashok shrugged. “Maybe he was revolting.”

There were rows “all the time, all the time” about politics between father and son.

“I’m a socialist,” says Ashok.
