International Women's Day

Santiago demo, with a bit of rioting at the end.

People stabbed by nazis after a march in Malmo.
Late last night several people were attacked in central Malmö by members of the fascist Svenskarnas Parti (Swedes Party). They were on their way home after having taken part in celebrations for International Women's Day.

The incident occurred just after a nighttime demonstration against violence against women finished up at around midnight on Möllenvångstorget (a square in the heart of a multicultural and left wing district of Malmö). One person is now in intensive care with serious head injuries and a further three have suffered knife wounds to the arms and lung, amongst which was a member of Allt åt Alla Malmö.

Are the pretty lights for a reason? And were the umbrellas for rain or in case of sprays/tear gas?

"Peeps got stabbed lmao! is it on youtube lol?"

Great thread to pick for useless snide shit. Just fuck off.

After all, we live in a country where a parliamentary assistant and election agent feels comfortable saying things like this on his public facebook profile

“I am absolutely sick and tired of this feminism nonsense. It really has gone too far.

“Quite a few of these women need a good slap round the face.”

so pardon me if I find people physically attacking feminist marchers quite frightening.

Hmm, if you thought I was being flippant my apologies, I probably was. I just find it fucking bizarre that a group of women marching for the right to be treated as equals to men should ever find themselves the victim of violence. I might well have been flippant because I can't actually handle the fucking awfulness of the truth.

After a year of so much shit around feminism, it's IWD again. Lots of people talking about it on twitter and so on. Anything been going on out and about?

I took my massively stropping lads to an IWD celebration in town. They were fighting like mad and had trackies on so weren't exactly a glowing example of single mothering. I took them cos I've been feeling really wobbly about my divorce coming through and I thought it might be empowering and affirming kind of like 'yay for the women and single Mums'. I painted a banner with a line down the middle like the side of a coin with vulnerable along one edge and strong on the other. I don't really do shit like that normally. The lads were forced to pretend they didn't know me :D

Remember India's Daughter is on BBC4 tonight.

6 Music has been celebrating female musicians today - ironically, it's the first time I've listened to 6 Music for a day and not heard that awful female Australian singer they keep pushing. :p

So it should be International Working Class day then? I hate to mansplain, but surely IWD can encompass a load of issues? Say in a country where women are denied abortion, that's going to affect you regardless of class (though maybe not quite to the same extent if you can afford to travel or pay someone off)? Or it could just be about recognising/celebrating women in the arts... or female scientists rather than tackling an 'issue'? Please correct me if I'm wrong. :D

The march in Oxford Street was definitely busier than last year's—possibly helped by the publicity of the police originally saying "no you have to pay for your own road closure" then eventually saying "oh all right then".

I did notice a difference in the policing though—last year it was all women coppers iirc and there was a more co-operative feel, whereas this year, just what you'd expect at any old protest.

No, it shouldn't. It's International Women's Day or International Working Women's Day according the wiki article on it. There is an International Workers Day also.

And if you hate to mansplain then please don't do it. Go and read about what IWD events and activities in over 100 countries around the world actually do.
