I consider myself pro-feminist, hope that doesn't mean I'm a rapist or anything.

The word itself is not hugely relevant. And actually, what you *think* isn't really very important to anyone except you.

You think the patriarchy is bad? Do something about it. Not 'activism' - but go out of your way to live your life a different way. Call out sexist twats... Not just overt nastiness, but let your mates know that their "I'd smash that" banter is fucking unacceptable. Be the priority phone number for your kids' school to contact, so it's you that has to leave work in the middle of the day when they're sick. Don't post on threads about patriarchy / feminism / sexism telling us about you, and what a good bloke you are. (It's not about you, you entitled fuck.)

I don't disagree. I don't want to give the impression everything is fine I just wanted to say that 1. Jobs that were considered male jobs are being done just as successfully by women where they have the opportunity and 2. Things are changing, but even with the numbers going up massively as they are it'll be long time before it tilts the balance across the board.
In my company its notable that where we have taken gender equality seriously now for about a decade, not just paying lip service, things have improved a lot. In civil engineering it's nearly at parity. However in other branches of engineering I've not seen so much change. Though I was pleased to see many women among the engineering apprentices this year. Remember I've been around since the dark ages and can remember when women in engineering was almost unthinkable. We didn't even have women's toilets or facilities on the underground when I started.
When I did my engineering degree the female intake on my course was about 5%, and that's if you include me. It was noticeably a lot more male than other courses on offer at Thames Poly.
I've been in engineering for 20 odd years, and I find it disheartening that in that time, in my discipline, there hasn't been that much change. That my female graduates are still very much in the minority on their degree courses. That companies pay lip service to gender equality. that only a few years ago I had to move desks because I was sat directly outside the offices and the directors assumed I was a secretary. That I am now the highest qualified woman in my department and some of my male colleagues will try to wind me up by calling me an administrator. It's hard work being an engineer and a woman, as you know. But we do not give up.

erm... was that to me specifically, an earlier post, or man-kind generally?

I take heart from the pockets of good practice but I know this is not enough.

Anyone here remember CR - womens conciousness raising groups in the 70s / 80s? Has anyone else here done this? We talked about sex, abuse, history, rape, war, health everything. We talked a lot about language and consensus and respect for each other. We questioned every convenvension, every assumption we had grown up with. We shared books and pamplets and tried to learn and grow. I feel like so little has changed and and somethings have gone backwards - I'm saddened by so many things I see and hear now.
Apols for the Farcebook link but I saw this event and remembered this post :)

Happy International Women's Day, all. I'm watching some IWD rock music on MTV and thinking about the patriarchy. Today I found a really good sports bra, which almost made up for the fact that the Sportswear department at my local House of Fraser is actually only men's sportswear. The women's sportswear bit is unsignposted and mainly consists of sparkly bralets. But I found one elsewhere after making my feelings known.

Bit tired now. Had a big dinner. Probably smash the patriarchy tomorrow.

I work for a technology company. We've got an IWD event tomorrow evening (so in our own time) with a panel of speakers. (When I say 'panel', there are two.) One's going to talk about stress and burnout and the other owns some kind of beauty salon.

Personally, I'd take getting invited to things I should be invited to, told about things I should be told about and not getting talked over in meetings. But hey, that's just me...

Someone who doesn't know (yet) that I've read some emails she wrote betraying me, which (presumably) she wrote because she had a crush on the man she was emailing and this was more important to her than literally anything else, has included me in her IWD-love-all-these-amazing-women-in-my-life posts :)

Interesting and has made me wonder whether cannabinoids could help with hot flushes. Although a stark reminder that we need quite a lot more research into this. Go them!

At our Amazon coronavirus debrief this morning the Amazon bod ended her talk mentioning IWD then produced what looked like a tray of flapjacks for the women driver to have, most of them looked unimpressed and wandered off back to their vans - probably more concerned about this virus business than anything else.

Anyone feeling like being abused, go on twitter with the hashtag #internationalwomensday and ask "Why is there not an International Men's Day?"

I forked out £52 for the limited edition 'Richard Herring told me when International Men's Day is' t-shirt as it was his final year of doing it.

I've been looking after my granddaughter while her momma goes back to work.
We spend the day with Baby-TV on.
Trust me, I've seen most of it. Kids love repetition.

Today was a bit odd.
At the end of each clip they had superimposed a hashtag.
#IWD2021

Took me a bit, but I finally figured out it was International Woman's Day

Didn't read Idris's link, but in our little area (pop 10,000) IWD is a big event.
Conferences, workshops, networking and home made products for sale.

This year was a bit different, everything was done on line.

Didn't see any of it coz I was with the little one.
