International Women's Day

miss direct

misfungled
is tomorrow (8th March). It's a semi big deal here in Turkey and was a HUGE deal in Poland. There will be a women's reclaim the night type march in Istanbul tomorrow. I would go, but it will probably end up getting tear gassed as every protests seems to lately.

How come it's never really been marked in the UK?

Not enough Communists.

from scratch = from the beginning

No, some others did much of the heavy work beforehand as I'm still not quite up to it yet but I ran the session for schools yesterday from mid morning and did the main session/lunch from 11-3 today. Bombed-out of the stuff tonight/tomorrow but that's because I'm on another job in the theatre on Sunday and I needed to get some adjustments to the lights before I keeled-over in pain.

I remember the observer doing a big piece on it a couple of years ago. I learnt lots of pretty horrifying stats on how shit most of the worlds females have it in life. Was a very sobering read. A pretty worthy day IMO.

I did a speech at our local event, It was ok in the end :) its quite a big deal over here I think. locally anyway but that would have come from gov down to local council.

Happy International Women's Day! Love from Myanmar :)

Burma President Thein Sein has ordered a new commission and the country’s highest court to draft a proposed so-called “protection of race and religion” law, which could include a controversial measure to restrict interfaith marriage, according to lawmakers.

A petition signed by about 1.3 million people has called for the president to pass into law a version of a bill drafted by lawyers on behalf of leading monks in the nationalist 969 movement.

If enacted without amendment, the bill—which is thought to be targeted at Muslims in Burma—would require Buddhist women to get permission from their parents and local government officials before marrying a man from another faith.

Anyone feeling like being abused, go on twitter with the hashtag #internationalwomensday and ask "Why is there not an International Men's Day?"

The most retweeted tweet on the subject amongst women appears to be "Happy #internationalwomensday Sugartits ;)" by Alan Carr

We did an assembly about inspirational women in school yesterday - predictably the staff looked more bored than the kids. It's an uphill struggle, I tell ya!

That might be partly because we had hired a load of them for our events, sorry! :D

There's a march down Oxford street to Trafalgar Square starting at 1.

Went along to this - decent turnout, good speakers and also one demo where you are sure not to see any SWP :D

It went down Wardour Street which, if you are not familiar with London, has one of Mr Stringfellow's "gentlemen's establishments" at the top. That got a lot of abuse, though no actual bricks/paint.

I did see there was an All Female Takeover of Leake Street (that's the graffiti tunnel near Waterloo) tomorrow - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/femme-fierce-leake-street-takeover-tickets-8711254597 - but I didn't actually connect it to IWD because erm I didn't realise it was tomorrow.
There's some good stuff here but I couldn't stay in the tunnel very long because of the fumes. All the actual artists have masks of course. Still, the results will be around for a while I guess.
