Insurance company CEO assassinated in New York

Reading elsewhere, I think the jury in the case of the choke hold fella might have had reasonable doubt about whether he actually caused the death because the defence presented expert witnesses who said the dead bloke had underlying conditions that could have killed him.

I'm not a lawyer and I haven't read much about that case, but I thought under British law at least, the victim having underlying conditions and the death not being easily predicable wasn't a defence.

So if, for example, I bash you over the head and you die as the result of a fractured skull, the fact that your skull is unusually fragile as the result of your rare bone condition isn't a defence.

I'm still surprised he got caught the way he did - if he had maybe skipped shaving for a few days and done something about his eyebrows I don't think many people would have given him a second look, he was reportedly wearing a blue surgical mask in the McDonald's, as he was in the taxi photo released by police, which would have been a much bigger giveaway than revealing his lower face

Looking at his X and the Mail profile he was probably off his tits on shrooms. Clearly having withdrawals, shaking like a leaf.

I get the munchies on shrooms too, maccas was prolly too big of a draw. Bit of a shitty end to what could have been an excellent escapade. But I assume they've got him in detox and he's very smart and articulate. So his day in court will be fun.

Withdrawals from shrooms isn't a thing and you don't need detoxing from them.

Well a comedown certainly is. I've been on the wrong end of that a few too many times.
Were benzos involved cos it would be them if so.
i think you can only get withdrawal, or at least to the extent that sudden withdrawal can be dangerous, from either booze and benzos.
Certainly not psychedelics

Withdrawals are only really a thing from substances which cause physical dependency. Alcohol, benzos, opioids and GHB/GBL.

Never been on a jury myself but in practice i suspect most juries have one or two loud mouthed dominent members who decide the verdict and the rest go along with what they think so they can go home. Unless a FOTL type is on there, he is fucked :(
Having served on a jury, that was not my experience of it. There was one loudmouth who reckoned the defendant was guilty on all counts from the outset and did not budge their opinion one jot during the trial but they did not get their way when it came to passing verdict.

Pah well Ceaucescu was ruthlessly murdered despite leaving three loving children and (briefly) a loving wife. You wishy washy namby pamby lefty bleeding heart liberal types

:)
I do worry about the labrador puppy David Steele gave Ceaucescu. I fear a fate worse than Rinka's. Never trust a Liberal with your pooch.

Didn’t know about GHB/GBL!
and wasn’t sure about opioids (all of them? Cold turkey not ever advised then?)

Basically, it's substances that activate either the opioid system or the GABA system. GHB/GBL work on GABA.

All opioids will cause physical dependency to a greater or lesser degree. Different opioids will stimulate different opioid receptors to different degrees.

It think it depends on the dose and how long a person has been taking them for really.
I always think of the analogy of night vision.

These things do the equivalent of making things dark. Your brain works to compensate giving you the equivalent of night vision.
Going cold turkey is like walking straight from a dark cave into the blazing sun but for your entire psyche not just your eyes.

Not a accurate metaphor but a expressive one.

CPS said:
Subject to three exceptions (which constitute partial defences to murder, and result in a conviction for manslaughter) the crime of murder is committed, where a person:
  • of sound mind and discretion (sane)
  • unlawfully kills (not self-defence or other justified killing)
  • any reasonable creature (a human being)
  • in being (born alive and breathing through its own lungs)
  • under the King's Peace (not in wartime)
  • with intent to kill or cause grievous bodily harm (in contrast to the offence of attempted murder, where only intent to kill will suffice)
US DoJ said:
Section 1751(a) of Title 18 incorporates by reference 18 U.S.C. §§ 1111 and 1112. 18 U.S.C. § 1111 defines murder as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice, and divides it into two degrees.

I was referencing the lawyer websites.

Plenty more in that list stating the same. But if pedantry makes you feel good, have at it. You win. It isn't defined in the way I stated, apart from in the thousands of places it's defined as I stated.
