I am getting very annoyed with littering.

My biggest personal beef is glass bottle smashers. When smashed into the road, it's always a menace for cyclists, and sometimes for dogs too, depending on location.

Dare I mention that by far the most common 'brand' of smashed beer bottle (IME) is 'Budweiser' :hmm:

Few years ago now, one of the local play areas had chipped bark as the "soft landing" - it had to be closed for cleaning fairly frequently as some dimwhit cockwombles used to smash booze bottles into the ground, and then cover up the glass shards. Eventually the play equipment was completely removed and the area grassed over.
Calling the rozzers when the cockwombles started messing about was pointless.

Calling them cockwombles is not serious, they are actually scum!

There could be compulsory community service for litterers which could be a number of hours, or tens of hours, picking up litter! Might that change minds?

There does seem to be a disproportionate quantity of those on the ground near me too, compared with their obvious market rivals of Coke, Pepsi, Tango, etc. Having said that, I think the "energy" drinks are somewhat cheaper, and so perhaps there's a socio-economic correlation with littering. It certainly seems to be more prevalent in the relatively deprived areas of my city.

If it's like most places, it may be as much a matter of litter collection as anything else. There's been mutterings for decades round here that the poorer areas see street hygiene people maybe twice a week, whereas the posh roads see 'em every day.

when the fox torturers of the countryside alliance came to london they picked up all the litter that was dropped or just didn't drop any so its not like litter is compulsory is just people being lazy arsed bastards.
what we need are roving bands of army provo staff permanently angry shouty types, instant PT sessions followed by area cleaning to a desired standard couple of hours being fucked about will soon change peoples minds:mad::D

Yet those same cockwombles are sure to be complaining that they and their kids now have nothing to do.........
Sometimes we get the environment we deserve :(

Unfortunately, the worst offenders didn't live in the relevant streets (actually most lived in the next estate along) and although drinking themselves into early graves didn't appear to be procreating ...

It was a particularly bad walk to work this morning, with me picking up no fewer than four discarded plastic bottles.

That esteemed organ the Daily Mail squarks in its oh-so-subtle way this morning "£100 FINES FOR DROPPING LITTER". There's no subheading and I certainly haven't read any further, but it's not entirely clear if they're angry* about this oppressive statism, or about anyone despoiling "this once great country" (® The right wing press).

*I suppose it is possible that they're happy and welcoming of such a move, but happiness at the DM may cause the space-time continuum to eat itself.

There's one bit near me that is used as a dumping ground that I don't mind, because it's set back from the road, not really visible as you walk past, and it's easy for the council to collect the rubbish from there (they come every couple of days because they know there'll be stuff there). It's basically become an unofficial tip. Not for general rubbish, just for things like furniture. I've even used it myself, because the council need six weeks' notice, charge £25 and IME don't always turn up. The nearest actual tip is 40 miles away and you need a big car to take stuff there. I bet most people on here would use that site if they lived here.

Freecycle is my preferred option for things like desks but the last few times I've offered stuff on there I've had no response.

Making that mini-dump official and having more sites like it would help, IMO.

I also used to use the local council estate's rubbish bins for my own rubbish because our communal bins had been locked away and the chutes to them were also locked. I literally had nowhere of my "own" to put my rubbish for about two years. Some other people just threw it in the street. The council estate bins weren't far away but maybe too far for some people on this estate.

It's got much better now that we actually have bins. Though for some reason some local company kept using a tree as a dumping ground for their rubbish. The council's solution was to cut down the tree. :(

That's fucking stupid. What's to stop dumping on the spot where the tree used to be? In fact shouldn't dumping be easier now that there isn't a tree in the way?

ffs, I have just come across the pinnacle of littering. This about 50 metres away from an Argos, so presumably they bought it there, took it to the canal tow-path, opened the pack, stuck the baby in it and lobbed the old one away with the packaging of the new one

I can't find a link, but I'm sure I've read somewhere that the plastic bag tax, almost a year old, has been very successful in decreasing the number produced. You would hope it has also lessened the number being dumped as litter, although this is just my inference. With that in mind, would other behaviour-change taxes work, specifically with regard litter? For example, could a nominal fee be put on takeaway coffee cups, which I see all over my particular urban area? Like the plastic bags, there's an easy alternative for customers; china mugs in the retailer, to be later washed up.

Once again my recycling bin has not been emptied because some cunt threw a bag of assorted rubbish in it after I'd put it out

ach

mine was refused the other week cos there was a bagged dog shit in it. later saw who did it- local bloke with serious learning difficulties and a pair of rombustious staffies that keep him company - he looks scarey but is as good as gold really. at least he is picking it up from the street, so i can work around having to check for bagged dog eggs on collection day

So they go through your rubbish to check what's in it before deciding whether or not to take it?

Buggy with loads of shopping breaks, parent struggles to argos carrying a kid, shopping and broken buggy, buys a new buggy then realises its impossible to push one buggy with child and shopping and also carry another buggy and a big empty box home. Similiar thing happened to me once, I ditched the broken buggy, I should probably be shot.

Bollocks.

Get a cab home? Cheaper than a new buggy.

Today I was walking behind a man who appeared to accidentally drop his box of cigarettes. I picked it up and ran after him to give it back with a smile; his expression wasn't exactly relieved.

It was only about 5 minutes later that I realized he might have been littering. :D

I walk the collie along a long straight fen drove and see numerous bags of dogshit, obviously people leaving it on the way outward part of the walk, promising themselves they will pick it up on the way back (which they don't). This is my charitable belief...and yet it would be so much better to simply kick the shit into the grass or even leave it to degrade...but placing it for posterity in a little black plastic bag? WTF.
Mousehold Heath, a lovely local resource in Norwich is also afflicted with trees festooned with dog bags...why? They have picked it up, bins aplenty and yet no, let's decorate a stately birch tree...

Do you seriously expect a skint parent to waste their money on cab just because it might upset a few peoples sense of aesthetics for a few seconds as they walk past. Ring the council and ask them to take it away if it bothers you that much. That's what we pay them money for isn't it?
