I am getting very annoyed with littering.

We have a sunflower seed problem in the area I work in. The streets are covered in husks. Some posters have been put up, but they've had no effect. :(

Thanks for the bump. Reminded me that I need to buy some disposable gloves do that I can visit the recycling centre.
Our one has a permit scheme where it ticks off how many visits you've made and then you need a new permit once you've made 12.

There are 3 or 4 flats on the landing above mine in my block that are occupied by couples/families thst8are all either mates or related. No real problem with the noise etc but it winds me up something chronic when they throw dog ends out their windows. The caretaker hardly comes over this side of the estate so there's usually a carpet of fag ends. plus atm, a couple of used nappies and other assorted detritus

I'm looking forward to life in France.
I've spent a lot of time exploring it using Google Earth and everywhere looks pristine.
(mind you the places I'm looking at are often deserted a lot of the time - no baker - but no Mairie either.)

I'm largely indifferent to littering in urban areas; I take the pragmatic view that collecting large numbers of humans and their associated activities into relatively small areas will inevitably generate some mess, and that the busybodies tutting or twitching the curtains do nothing, at least compared to actually hiring some of those aforementioned humans and actually paying them a living to clean up that shit.

However, I do get ticked off at people who go to the trouble of walking half-way up a damn mountain, but can't be arsed to put their snack wrappers, used teabags, tissues etc back in their rucksacks. Like, I can understand some of the laziness and apathy behind littering if you're in some dumpy shit-tip of a no-name town with nothing more classy than a Nando's on the High Street, but not when you're in Snowdonia National fucking Park.

I noticed that the other day - I think it's cultural

Ah well that's ok then. Cultural. Better just leave it.

snacking on sunflower seeds. the husks are inedible, so some folks chuck em on the floor.

Spit them on the floor IME. You put the seed in the mouth, split it with the teeth and spit out the husk. I've watched people do it all day in Israel and in Egypt. I can't manage it, I use my fingers.

But yeah, almost certainly spat, not chucked.

I don't need it, I've got my own

Actually I should say the reason I even mentioned it, is that while I broadly agree with what NoXion posted about littering in the urban environment. I don't much care, the city's a fucking mess anyway - but spitting is a bit different, and in the urban environment constitutes a health hazard way beyond what littering does. Spitting all day with people around is pretty vile.

NoXion and mojo pixy are clearly prolific litterers

Personally, no. I carry rubbish in my pocket and wait to find a bin, I just find it hard to get worked up about people who don't. I can mither as righteously as anyone when the moment comes on me, but it's not something I feel deeply, compared say to spitting or parking on pavements.

It shows a complete disregard for your environment and fellow human beings. It makes places look grim and depressing. I'd put them in the stocks

Similar round here. You get groups of blokes sat on a doorstep for hours munching the damn things.

NYC used to have PSAs like this one, which sought to reduce litter basically by encouraging people to threaten other people

I fully approve of the sentiment the problem is the kind of people who drop litter shamelessly in public places aren't the kind of people to pick it up when they're told and it always ends up in a slanging match. I've given up though my hometown is just ruined by littering.
