Hurricane Sandy - "Perfect Storm"

more aftermath news: things starting to get tense in NYC.

the reality of no power or transportation for days must be really devastating for a lot of people... things you don't think about, such as the story I heard on the radio about a woman who lived in a high-rise, and was having to carry water not just up to her family's apt. on the 4th floor, but also to her elderly mother on the 16th floor, several times a day

Hard enough work, even across a field, worse up several flights of stairs. And that's before you have to get batteries or fuel.

In the bit where you've been stuck, which still has electricity.

No, I've been all over town. Everyone is calm, even below 30th, where there's no power except generators (although there are a LOT of generators).

Basically, you wouldn't even know that anything untoward was going on, unless you read the press and/or watch TV. Which I guess is what Miss Caphat, Rutita and people like them have been doing--hence their hysteria. I suppose they're entitled to their hysteria, but they're not entitled to carry their scaremongering onto these boards, where they actually might influence people. The truth is that everything is fine.

Yeah dunno what those damn Africans that have to walk miles to get water every day are complaining about. They don't have have stairs to negotiate.

Phildwyer is trying to gloss over the issue of the colour of his trousers, I suspect because it's not something he's comfortable with being subject to scrutiny over.

Are we to understand that he has decided this is information he is not going to divulge? I suspected this would be his tactic.

New York tonight.

Actually I'm not sure what color you'd call them. It's a sort of ambiguous color. I believe Drew's film of me in Times Square is on this thread somewhere, so why don't you take a look at that and tell me what color my trousers are? If you care so much.

Have you been to Staten Island and the Queens shore, Phil?

Christ no. You crazy? There are man-eating crocodiles washing up there, along with the tsunami, the typhoon, a thousand varieties of shark, some water-tigers and Rutita's soiled underwear. No-one can go within ten miles and hope to survive that horror.

Happy now?

We are not allowed to care.

Of course you should care. Just don't pretend that this is a "disaster" or anything more, for the VAST majority, than a temporary inconvenience. To do so is to insult the victims of real disasters.

And speaking of inconvenience, I'm off to the airport to see if they've finally got their act together. Thanks for the conversation...

The blessed Laurie Penn has flown in, so you should be able to fly out.

How about you stop telling myself and others what to do, what to think and so forth.

We get it Phil, where you are and where you have been, it's no big thing, lucky you.

Have you finally realised that he's a master of stonewalling? Also, what with you being male and him being male, it's probable that neither of you could tell beige, stone, pale sand, greige etc apart.

Twist my words, why don't you? I wasn't talking about developing countries, nor making a comparison with them.

Sky news has just shown a clip of a pensioner who stayed for the storm... for the excitement :D
You know how it is, you reach a certain age and start thinking that if you haven't died yet, this won't kill you either. Or, if it does, at least it might be an interesting way to go.
