Hurricane Sandy - "Perfect Storm"

Well I certainly don't base my judgment of people on the color of their trousers.

Do you?

Evidently it is not something you give much consideration to.

Certainly I feel that it can often convey information of significance. So, what colour were they?

Just for the record, Teuchter, what are you wearing today? I need to know in order to assess your fashionista ability.

At present I am dressed appropriately for the work I am doing. As no other human will see me today, it would be foolish of me to dress in a manner aimed at demonstrating my fashionista ability rather than in a manner that promotes my safety and work efficiency.

As am I :p The fact that I also choose to dress for me is neither here nor there.

Get you with your 'I'm so cool that I dress for practicality instead of making a sartorial statement' vibe. IME it's possible to combine both, to some extent.

Of course NY gets a lot of coverage. That's where the news services have their offices. NY has always been treated like the earth ends at Jersey. It's not just other countries that get little news coverage, its other parts of the US. Ever heard of the "Flyover States"? For news out my way to get any coverage, you have to find a dozen people skinned alive in a farmhouse, with Satanic symbols drawn in the floor, and hung up to cure like meat.

I know. This thread is a laugh, coming from a country where people pee their pants over an inch of snow and don't leave their houses for days.
In fact, that should be a good indication of how serious this storm was. Think about the fact that NYC, New Jersey, etc., can handle dozens of big snowstorms each year, and generally get on with things immediately after the snow has stopped falling.
Yet with this storm, airports and subways are still closed 2 days later.

Parts of West Virginia received 22 inches of snow from Sandy. I wonder what effect that would have in London? I was still getting customer calls from VW this week.

Ain't that the truth.

I once had to leave a conference in NYC a day early, because I had a previous engagement in Bowling Green, OH. When I explained this to the organizer, he just laughed and said "no you don't." The idea that someone might honor a commitment in Ohio rather than stay in NYC was literally unthinkable to him.

That's how New Yorkers and, to a lesser extent, Californians feel. And they're not ashamed to display their snobbery in public either. People who would die before making a racist or sexist comment will quite happily bang on about the hicks and hayseeds who happen to come from the other 48 states.

That doesn't make it better though. It makes it worse.

That's one of the reasons I'm not certain of your characterization of the entire event because you're in NYC. NYC has had billions spent on making sure disasters don't effect it. I'd also add that FEMA, the federal/state/local governments were well prepared for this. The coordination of Katrina between those entities was bad in New Orleans. The loss of life wouldn't have been as bad if the director of FEMA had been remotely qualified for the job. (Or, if the President had been for that matter.) The evacuation of New Orleans was completely botched and cost a lot of lives.

Ridiculous, panic mongering, utterly hysterical article. Oh no the only place to eat is a pizza restaurant. What will we ever do.

Innit.

I just spent 4 hours wandering round Manhattan. Pretty much everything is back to normal. Still no power below 30th on the east side, but most places have found a way to open. Even the dealers on Avenue D have been replaced by Guardian Angels.

Storm in a teacup...

Seriously, what do you think you're doing, posting up crap like this?

You should be ashamed of yourself.

The Guardian Angels are still operating?

I was amazed too, haven't seen them in years.

Yesterday I noticed that some dealers had set up shop in the projects off Ave D. That was even more surprising, since all open air drug activity had been banished from that area 15 years ago. So they must have been opportunistically taking advantage of the cops being distracted by the storm. Presumably some residents of the projects called up the Angels to replace them. They were acting like twats too, strutting up and down, eyeballing white pedestrians with great suspicion, and generally making themselves obnoxious.

:D I'll share what I like and I do not have to justify that to you or anyone else.

Given that you didn't join this thread until post 334 when it appeared you could take over and make it all about you I don't think your word or advice counts for much. So jog on Phil...

maybe Phil should make this a new career. He can go from one "fake" disaster zone to the next, reporting on how everything's A-ok, for him as a tourist who lives in another country, anyway.

I don't live in another country. I live in the USA. And I've seen quite enough real disasters in my life to know the difference between them and this. Have you?
