Hurricane Sandy - "Perfect Storm"

Just out of curiousity, how deep will that be,does it go down stairs meaning some whole tunnels/platforms below are submerged?

I'm not sure. I heard on NPR today about one of the tunnels that is flooded in New Jersey that there is something like 41 million gallons of water that needs to be pumped out, and that will take a few days

I don't live in another country. I live in the USA. And I've seen quite enough real disasters in my life to know the difference between them and this. Have you?

for an American you have a really limited understanding of how hurricanes work, and the fact that they can do significant damage to one area and leave neighboring areas basically unscathed. I have been living through hurricanes my whole life, and nor'easters, and blizzards. I do actually know what I'm talking about.

I don't really even know why I'm even responding here. You're obviously set on trolling this thread with your ignorance and Marie Antionette-ish attitude, totally ignoring that this whole thread has been full of evidence of the damage done by this storm.

Nobody here, myself included, has claimed this storm was a terrible tragedy akin to Katrina, or the Japan tsunami, or anything. It's pretty much understood that a hurricane this far up from the equator could even do anything near that kind of damage.
But massive, widespread damage is what it did do. It's going to take a long time and lots of money, a huge amount of which is going to come out of people's personal savings, unless they have flood and or hurricane insurance which most won't.

In an already struggling economy, that is also going to have long-term consequences for a lot of people.

sorry, having computer issues and can't edit. I meant it's understood that hurricanes up this far are NOT capable of doing that kind of damage (like Katrina did, etc)

It is you who are trolling here.

Anyone can see that the media coverage of this event was ridiculously over-stated throughout. People were needlessly worried. One poster on here even cancelled his holiday for no reason. If you compare the reaction to this storm with the far more muted reaction to far worse tragedies elsewhere in the world, you must notice a huge discrepancy. Most people understand that this discrepancy reveals reprehensible, even racist, attitudes on the part of the news media. You choose to ignore this, just as you choose to disregard the obvious vested interests involved in portraying the storm as a major disaster.

Have you ever experienced a real disaster?

you're not actually reading my posts or anyone else's on here, are you?

You say that now, but that certainly wasn't the impression the public received from the media over the last 5 or 6 days, now was it?

You're basically arguing a hopeless case here. If the storm was always as harmless as you now admit, then you should join with those of us who are criticizing the absurdly exaggerated coverage it received.

get back to me when you learn how to read and comprehend information. bye bye now.

Romney flip-flops on FEMA:

Although he has flip-flopped already, in a response to a question about whether government spending on federal disaster ought to be shifted to the states, Romney said:

"Absolutely ... Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"

"Including disaster relief, though?" debate moderator [CNN's] John King asked Romney. The response:

"We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

Of course now that the entire East Coast of the country is facing the prospects of billions of dollars in damage from Sandy, Romney is saying he would not get rid of FEMA, only that he would shift the power to the states. The problem with this position should be apparent to anyone who was alive during Hurricane Katrina: A robust federal disaster response mechanism is essential. When a disaster is too large for the states to handle, people are left on rooftops. They go days without water and food. They die.

If you don't, I do. What buttercream icing affair?

It was one of those ridiculous, 25 page arguments about food. Someone asked what kind of icing Americans use on cakes. Miss Caphat and I both posted buttercream recipes and were reliably assured that Americans use no such thing. It turned out that they were probably looking for one of those gawd-awful concoctions that cheap bakeries use involving whipped topping. :D

ok, I remember that. I don't remember getting upset about it though but at the same time it doesn't surprise me.
