Huge fire at Notre Dame cathedral, Paris

Can't imagine that the end result will be a building razed to the ground but even if that were to be the case they would have to rebuild it not least because of where it is.

There must be hundreds of books I have read that something happens in Notre Damn.

Shame. :(

well TopCat is taking the view of a work college of mind about it

"its over 850 years old and has been around since 1160"

"meh i prefer aritcuture thats modern like Dubai"

jebus some people have little magic in there soul

Don't try to align my views with your work colleague. His/her view is bollocks.

He can't, it's collapsed. :(

Yes because we're all such devout Catholics on here. That must be the reason people are sad about this.
Well I was/am interested in why you are sad about it. A discussion of the value of the Church in society as seen by atheists would be fascinating.

For lack of foolishness?>
Ok, so, like cathedrals and churches everywhere it can be seen as a symbol of oppression by the Church over centuries. I get that. I saw one video tonight of people singing hymns in a church opposite the fire. I thought that was ridiculous, given their god was allowing their temple to burn.

But the craftsmanship and sheer human endeavour that went into those buildings is immense. Those stained glass windows are (sorry, were) something to behold.

I am often surprised how, as an atheist with pagan sympathies, I still admire great religious buildings.

I would imagine given the type of building and where it is that it's a remarkably difficult fire to fight.

How awful.

I would have imagined that it was this building would be one of the most prepared for this type of eventuality.

Cos it's a beautiful building that took two hundred years to build, almost gone in the space of a few hours.

Fair enough. I appreciate the lack of insults too. It's much more than the history of oppression though that makes me loathe these symbols of enduring Church power.
