holding the pencil when drawing

Gavin Bl

terrible awful baaad
Hi all
I'm just starting to practise some sketching and drawing with a book I bought the other day. In the book it recommends holding the pencil in more loose way, 'like holding a paint brush', rather than holding it like a pen.

I must admit I am finding this hard work, and it doesn't seem to be very good at accuracy.

Any sketchers out there who can tell me if this is a big deal or not - should I persist with the new method, or plough ahead holding the pencil like I would a pen?

thanks alot
Gav

I hold both in pretty much the same way, but rest my hand on the paper with a pencil and don't rest it with a paint brush.

Depends on what you want as a result, really - if you want loose, use charcoal or pastels on big sheets of paper, if you want tighter, use pencil on small paper. Try lots of different techniques and materials, till you feel comfortable. :)

Find whats right for you, i hold mine different all the time as i have problems with my hands so get finger cramps alot..but holding it in different ways gives different textures and pressure..just play around until you fine one that suits you.
