Gymnastics thread

It may very well be. I have no earthly idea.
The closest I ever got to gymnastic credibility was winning a handstand competition during a boring phase at work last year. There was me - an old bird well stricken in years - a part timer with a hangover who was a Leeds piano student of some twenty summers, a twenty two year old who claimed to have been tragically weakened by the heat coinciding with his Ramadan fasting and a twenty six year old who claimed to have failed because of her false nails.
My job's like that. :D

Women's artistic qualification starts at 0930 today :)

I used to be fascinated by that fat wool they did their bunches up in :D

Being in Australia I only get to watch Australia. They seriously show no one else. It's infuriating to say the least. I've now given up watching the Olympics as rather than being sporting and showing many competitors it's as if Australia are the only country competing. I take solace in the fact they're not doing as well as they thought they would.

I can no longer watch it though as I have begun shouting at the tv.

Olympics ruined again.

Fucking silly cunt Australian tv

Australia's turning into America :(:D

I think it's a shame that gymnastics has moved forward so much. I was looking at YouTube vids the other week of female gymnasts from years ago. The parallel bars used to be much closer together so there was lots of sideways stuff going on which you don't get anymore:

Bloody hell, the bars got bigger but the gymnasts have gotten smaller and smaller!!

BBC 3 from 2.00pm, but I don't know exactly when. TV Guide on TV just says coverage of women's archery team, gymnastics qualification session for Team GB and sailing etc) but that's 2.00pm-7.00pm.

I think more gymnastics according to schedule starts at 2.45 so maybe around then

Have just heard whilst watching live online that at 2.45pm Britain is competing along with America and Canada

Well, that's a bugger. I was going to watch Columbo vs Little Richard on ITV, I'll have to record the film now.

b/f is moaning that there's nothing on except Olympics and it's on every single channel. Considering he doesn't know about channels 301 and 302, it's only on TWO channels.

He's in a strop now and has had to take to reading a book

Did you see that video I put up there? Don't you think those moves are more interesting? Why did they move the bars further away so those moves aren't done any more? I think they're much more fun

Moomoo, who should we be looking out for (anyone but Americans)? :D

The movement of the bars reflects the overall movement in gymnastics away from the artistic towards the athletic. The floor routines used to be a lot more graceful and less "flicky" than they are now. All the arm and wrist flicking in the floor and beam routines annoys me, it's not a replacement for graceful dancing, but I think that although something is missed in having moved the asymmetric bars father apart it does allow for more exciting flight between the bars.

My gymnastic heroes were from the 70s and 80s - Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut.

And when I was a gymnast we didn't have handguards for the bars. Oh no. I had awesome hard callouses in ridges accross my hands and on my hips.

I hate all the prissyness (for want of a better word) on the floor and beam routines. The men do their floor routines without music and prissyness. Why can't the women? What's with all these little sticky-out fingers and bums sticking out.

Yep, Nadia and Olga are what got me hooked

Hmm, almost got iplayer to work using foxy proxy and some dodgy proxies I found on the internet. It no longer tells me it wont work because I'm outside of the uk however it now just says there's been an error, please try again later.

NOYING

I think it was Dos Santos.

Hypolito was scary-looking! She had a full-on "I'm going to beat the shit out of this competition" look.

Oh, finished now until 2.40pm and it's pissing down so women's cycling road race is making interesting viewing :D

My favourite thing about watching is going "I cannot BELIEVE I used to be able to do that". Not the really complicated stuff, I wasn't that good, but I could do backflips on the beam and shit.

Why do men not do the beam, in case they damage their crown jewels?

No idea. The only apparatus the men and women have in common is the Floor. Have you ever tried the pommel horse? It's fucking IMPOSSIBLE.
