Olympic Commute Ranting Thread

One my equivalent of a commute route today: Had to walk back from Streatham because buses were being turned at Atkins Rd (because of the Torch relay), and even buses not heading into Brixton were stuck in very slow traffic. Before anyone says I should've gone earlier, this was before noon and the Torch wasn't due through Brixton before 2pm.
the bastards
and there is really no need for it, when we had the torch in Cardiff there was a rolling road block and the road was only shut from about 5-10 mins before and opened within 5 mins after it went past

on topic, loads of roads in middle of Cardiff are shut off and it's obv thrown all the buses off but great for cyclists

I'm rather enjoying it. Live near vauxhall underground so have started to walk to work and back. Takes me around 58 minutes to walk from flat to Moorgate. Love the walk along the south bank. Beautiful weather. Fresh air. Unless it's pouring down, I can't see me taking the bus anymore. Excellent excersise too.

Friend of mine has moved to Amsterdam for the duration.
To say I'm jealous would be an understatement.
With you there. If I could have got the money together soon enough (and if VP had been well enough to travel) I'd have booked from now until the end of the paralympics. Where? *shrug* More or less anywhere but London.

Well it seems as though everyone listenend to the apocalyptic visions of how the roads would be and stayed away. Apart from Camberwell New Road being its usual massively fucked self, Nine Elms and the Chelsea Embankment were empty. Even Earls Court had pretty light traffic.

Was almost like a Sunday ride in to work.

The Jubilee line from Dollis Hill was a little more packed than usual a few more children a few quite teary eyed. London Bridge wa okay too.

going home might be a trouble tho.

Had a quick journey across London - tubes very empty, no crowds at Victoria.. think everyone's decided to work from home or take holiday.

You wouldn't get that impression listening to a black cab driver this morning moaning about the Zil lanes

It's almost like..... a thousand Chicken Littles have been predicting a traffic apocalypse...that never happened. That's good news.

Maybe some of the other myriad dire olympic predictions will turn out to be misguided as well. :)

Now you'll just have to tough the whole thing out in misery.:(

I predict it will be fucking hell trying to get back to South East London though tonight :(

I was looking at the new tube map yesterday with hotspots, which was a lucky thing as I never realised Excel (Custom House) would be EXIT ONLY and Prince Regent would be ENTRY ONLY

http://www.getaheadofthegames.com/travelinaffectedareas/city/london-public-transport.html

They're giving directions to Excel from Brixton as getting central line to Stratford and yet the other week when I looked for directions, it was saying Green Park and Jubilee Line. Still trying to figure out which would be easier for non-Londoner guests

Can I just say how much we are enjoying the no fly zone? It's quieter on Tottenham Marsh than it is on the Upper Thames. Bliss.

I think it depends what's on... Oh, hang on - I just checked today's schedule to say "See, Holborn was empty cuz nothing on at Horse Gaurds Parade [interchange with Picadilly]" but actually the beach volleyball *is* on today.

Fuck alone knows - I can't work it out and as it's so quiet I am not sure I need to :hmm:

According to that map, Green Park may be busy that day because of cycling road race, but I suppose it depends what time that finishes. The boxing they're attending on 1 August starts at 1.30pm.

had an easy drive in today, admittedly im not in london but am in Egham where the rowing is and we have Olympic lanes, but my journey in was 35 mins when its usually takes about 45 mins

Haven't the cycling road races happened already? :hmm:

hm, looks like they've lumped them in together without taking account of the fact that it's not in central London

Wednesday 1 August: Men's and women's Road Cycling Time Trial
