Ground-rules for linking

JuanTwoThree

Anecdotage
R.I.P.
I'm interested in how people view links to unpleasant sites. I generally agree with the dislike many feel of seeing links to The Sun, though I've forgotten it a few times, and obviously posting links to outandout fascist sites isn't acceptable. But the DM, DE, DT? Or a site I linked to this morning, Spiked, which is thoroughly nasty in its ohsoreasonable way?

Where to draw the line?

I questioned linking to Spiked because it is especially nasty, edited by Brendan O'Neill and seems to quite actively go after its critics on Twitter.

I would never link to the Sun or DM just on principle, but I think with smaller outfits like Spiked the danger is inviting them here. I am happy to be proven wrong though.

What about a broken link? It's sometimes useful if you want to tell people about something but without the target necessarily picking up that you've linked. Does that still work? (Obvs not in terms of avoiding revenue-earning traffic, just avoiding them trolling us back.)

I'm glad you don't think I was having a go polly . It was a train of thought from your comment, whose argument I found compelling.

danny la rouge I get that feelings run very high. Would you post a DM link? I have hated the DM with a passion as long as I can remember, but I'll link to it.

The tech escapes me but it seems a good plan if you don't want to alert some arsehole, though it hardly applies to big news sites.

Not even a little bit! We can't all reasonably be expected to know about every two bit news outlet. I think it was someone else who made a compelling argument though :D Possibly Poot or Red Cat.

Breaking links, like bluescreen says, has been the usual way to avoid linking to dubious sites.

I dislike the Mail. I can’t imagine wanting to link to it. But that’s different to my active boycott of the S*n.

Have we really got so intellectually soft that people think 'we' can't link to spiked? There's no 'we' here beyond beyond anti-fascist stuff - that's baseline. The S*N stuff is an active boycott (as Danny says) that many people here support and - quite rightly - aggressively(or not) try to impose on other posters and make the common sense of the boards. People can try that with spiked and get laughed out of court.

I don't link to anything.

Buts thats because I have no idea how :D and I'm good with that.

Yeah that's fair enough. I have a particular thing about Spiked but like I said, happy to be proven wrong in my questioning, and wasn't telling anyone what to do.

I would link to anything in the right context, bar far right shit or the Sun (because as others have said, that is an active boycott that is holding firm across a substantial number).

I would link to Spiked in the right context, even though I really fucking hate Spiked and IoI and the whole RCP network. Normally that context is look what these cunts are saying rather than this is something I agree with, although Spiked despite being cunts are occasionally good at pricking liberal left bubble. But they are cunts.

Underlined bit above -- spot on. There are a few poccasion when it might? be necessary to link to some idiocy or conspiraloonery or "contrarianism" in Spiked, simply to take it apart, identify the dangers of people like O'Neill's arguments, or just to take the piss.
Like most on this thread/Urban, I'd always boycott the S*n, IRL or online  -- I've never linked to it on here I'm fairly sure, and it's a been a very long time since I even looked at it .
